What are nannies?

Nannies are professional caregivers who provide childcare services for families, typically in the family's home. Their responsibilities often include supervising children, preparing meals, organizing activities, assisting with homework, and sometimes performing light housekeeping related to the children. Nannies may work full-time, part-time, or live-in, and can care for children of various ages. Unlike babysitters, nannies usually have a more consistent schedule and a longer-term relationship with the family. They often have experience or training in early childhood development and first aid.

How do nannies typically balance the needs of multiple children in one household?

Nannies often care for children of different ages and personalities, requiring strong multitasking and organizational skills. They create structured routines, plan age-appropriate activities, and prioritize open communication with parents to ensure each child's individual needs are met. Collaboration with the family and flexibility are key, as nannies may need to adapt daily schedules or handle conflicts between siblings. Over time, experienced nannies become adept at managing varying demands while maintaining a safe and nurturing environment.

What is the difference between Nannies vs Babysitters?

AspectNanniesBabysitters
CredentialsOften require background checks, childcare certifications, or experienceUsually no formal credentials required
Work EnvironmentTypically work in the child's home, sometimes on a full-time basisUsually work on a casual, as-needed basis, often in the child's home
Employer & Industry UsageHired by families for ongoing care, sometimes through agenciesHired for short-term or occasional babysitting, often informally

While both Nannies and Babysitters provide childcare, Nannies generally have more formal training, work regularly in the child's home, and are employed for ongoing care. Babysitters tend to work on a casual basis without formal credentials, often for short periods. Understanding these differences helps families choose the right caregiver for their needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need experience in childcare, basic first aid knowledge, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with child safety systems, CPR/first aid certification, and sometimes child development software is beneficial. Patience, strong communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for building trust and connecting with children and families. These skills and qualifications ensure a safe, nurturing environment and support healthy child development.

Job description

Joanna's Nannies is seeking a motivated and dedicated nanny to join our team! Although this position specifically says San Jose, we are always hiring all around the Bay Area so it doesn't hurt to apply if you are interested! We're looking for someone with open availability-ideally 3 to 4 full days per week. Hours are flexible but will typically consist of an 8-hour day. This position is unique because instead of working with one family each day, we send the nannies out on weekly assignments so would be working with a variety of clients! This helps avoid burnout, but also provide you with a unique & diverse experience while allowing you to make your own schedule, and have a work-life balance!
Our ideal candidate is comfortable caring for children of all ages and prioritizes educational play, imaginative crafts, and creative engagement.
In addition to flexible scheduling, we offer periodic raises, frequent bonuses, and many other benefits that come with being part of a premier childcare agency. We'd love to discuss these opportunities further with qualified candidates.
We look forward to meeting you!
Job Requirements:
-3+ Years Experience
-Valid Driver's License and Reliable Vehicle
-Willing to travel to surrounding locations
*Position is not remote, care will take place in client's homes, near your home location.
