As of Jul 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for nannies in the United States is $23.57, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $26.92 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are nannies?

Nannies are professional caregivers who provide childcare services for families, typically in the family's home. Their responsibilities often include supervising children, preparing meals, organizing activities, assisting with homework, and sometimes performing light housekeeping related to the children. Nannies may work full-time, part-time, or live-in, and can care for children of various ages. Unlike babysitters, nannies usually have a more consistent schedule and a longer-term relationship with the family. They often have experience or training in early childhood development and first aid.

How do nannies typically balance the needs of multiple children in one household?

Nannies often care for children of different ages and personalities, requiring strong multitasking and organizational skills. They create structured routines, plan age-appropriate activities, and prioritize open communication with parents to ensure each child's individual needs are met. Collaboration with the family and flexibility are key, as nannies may need to adapt daily schedules or handle conflicts between siblings. Over time, experienced nannies become adept at managing varying demands while maintaining a safe and nurturing environment.

What is the difference between Nannies vs Babysitters?

AspectNanniesBabysitters
CredentialsOften require background checks, childcare certifications, or experienceUsually no formal credentials required
Work EnvironmentTypically work in the child's home, sometimes on a full-time basisUsually work on a casual, as-needed basis, often in the child's home
Employer & Industry UsageHired by families for ongoing care, sometimes through agenciesHired for short-term or occasional babysitting, often informally

While both Nannies and Babysitters provide childcare, Nannies generally have more formal training, work regularly in the child's home, and are employed for ongoing care. Babysitters tend to work on a casual basis without formal credentials, often for short periods. Understanding these differences helps families choose the right caregiver for their needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need experience in childcare, basic first aid knowledge, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with child safety systems, CPR/first aid certification, and sometimes child development software is beneficial. Patience, strong communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for building trust and connecting with children and families. These skills and qualifications ensure a safe, nurturing environment and support healthy child development.

Responsibilities and Duties

WHO/WHAT:ย If your ideal days include fresh air, busy little feet, and a family who genuinely does life wellโ€”this one is special. Tucked on a hobby farm, this is a warm, grounded, deeply intentional family thatโ€™s building something beautiful. Their home runs on love, laughter, and a steady rhythm.

Right now, their days revolve around two little onesโ€”a bright, energetic toddler and a happy, curious babyโ€”with another sweet addition arriving this fall. They have every intention of adding a few more little feet to the mix and would love a nanny whoโ€™s excited to grow with them through each new chapter. Big brother is all movement and personality: running, climbing, asking questions, and turning everything into a game. He thrives with someone who can match his energy, stay engaged, and guide him through his big world with patience and playfulnessโ€”especially as he transitions into becoming a big sibling. Little brother is in that joyful baby stageโ€”learning, exploring, smiling big, and soaking in everything around him. Your role will center around creating days that feel engaging, active, and groundedโ€”getting outside often, planning simple outings (local parks, library days, and, when comfortable, trips to museums or the zooโ€”the family car is provided), reading stacks of books, and helping both children feel secure, stimulated, and deeply cared for. This is a hands-on, present kind of roleโ€”phones down, fully engaged, building connection in all the small, everyday moments. The family especially values a nanny who doesnโ€™t just supervise, but thoughtfully weaves developmental learning into everyday play.

This position is a thoughtful hybrid of childcare and household support. The family is incredibly collaborative and flexible hereโ€”the goal is simple: help keep life running smoothly. As time allows, youโ€™ll help lighten the familyโ€™s loadโ€”meal prep, dishes, laundry, tidying, organizing, and taking initiative where itโ€™s helpful. If you enjoy creating order and stepping in proactively, this will feel really satisfying. Because their home sits on a hobby farm, there may be the occasional simple task like collecting eggs with the childrenโ€”nothing heavy and always optional, just a natural part of the rhythm that adds a really special layer to the role. Both parents work from home part of the time. Theyโ€™re available and supportive, but very respectful of the nannyโ€™s space and roleโ€”they trust you, give you autonomy, and want you to feel confident taking the lead. At the same time, mom is thoughtful about how the home runs and has built strong systems and routines to support their daysโ€”this role is a true partnership in bringing those rhythms to life with consistency. This is a long-term opportunity with a family who truly values their nanny and is excited to grow alongside the right personโ€”through this next season and beyond.

THE IDEAL NANNY ISโ€ฆExperienced, nurturing, and fully present. You genuinely enjoy being in it with kidsโ€”running, playing, teaching, redirecting, and creating days that feel fun, intentional, and full of connection. Youโ€™re especially attuned to toddler development and transitions, understanding how big this season is for their oldest as a new baby joins the family. You bring patience, awareness, and a steady, reassuring presenceโ€”and you know how to meet children where they are while gently helping them grow. Youโ€™re proactive by natureโ€”you donโ€™t wait to be asked. You notice what would make the day run more smoothly and step in with ease. Just as importantly, you take pride in consistency. Youโ€™re someone who can confidently implement established routines and rhythms, knowing how much that stability matters to a growing family.

This family values open, honest, and direct communication, and theyโ€™re looking for a nanny who does too. They stay connected through informal weekly check-ins and more intentional monthly conversations, creating space to reflect, adjust, and grow together. A nanny who is comfortable speaking up, asking questions, and keeping parents looped in will feel especially aligned here. Youโ€™re happiest outside and can keep pace with a toddler who rarely slows down. Whether itโ€™s park days, backyard play, or the occasional โ€œshould we just go swim?โ€ kind of afternoonโ€”youโ€™re right there with them. Most of all, youโ€™re looking for a long-term homeโ€”a place where you can build meaningful relationships, grow alongside a family, and become a steady, trusted presence in childrenโ€™s lives for years to come. Come for the sweet kids and fresh airโ€”stay because you found your people.
