Job Description

Role Summaryย 

NBC Connecticut is looking for a creative and driven journalist to join our team. The ideal candidate will understand how to tell a powerful story on all platforms, leaning into different techniques that ย ย meet audiences where they are. We're looking for someone who reports, shoots, writes, voices, edits and feeds your content for all relevant platforms, assigned by leadership.ย 

Essential Functionsย 

  • Generate story ideas, research and set up the content and interviews, produce the content in the field, write and voice the story, and present the story as scheduled on a designated platform.
  • Partner with news producers, managers and photographers to conceptualize, write, edit, and produce station news packages. Produce additional video and graphic presentations as requested.ย 
  • Collaborate with our multiplatform leadership to create specialized daily content for social media platforms, including our website and app.
  • Research and analyze background information to verify information. Select video and coordinate the editing and graphic design production for material that appears on-air.ย ย 
  • Review your own work, including correcting spelling and factual errors before sending in your scripts for approval.
  • Communicate with news producer and managers regarding story development, progress in the field and/or breaking news stories.ย 
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining high editorial standards.
  • Build relationships with the community and community leaders for the purpose of developing connections to story leads.
  • Establish network of contacts and sources across Connecticut.ย  Cooperate with and support NBC News, Newschannel and other Owned Television Stations.ย 
  • Participate in station-sponsored events and all assigned special promotions projects.ย ย 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in newsgathering and/or productionย 
  • Minimum 2 years' experience writing, producing and desktop editingย 

Eligibility Requirementsย

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and overnights.
  • Must Be willing to work in West Hartford, Connecticut
  • Must have the ability to work any of a 24 x 7 shift
  • Must be covered by Solutions, NBCU's Alternative Dispute Resolution Program
  • Physical requirements required to perform medium/heavy physical work which includes lifting and carrying camera equipment ranging from 15 lbs. to 50 lbs. (in camera weight) for extended periods of time to shoot on remote locations
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • This position is an AFTRA Represented job. Successful candidate will be required to join the AFTRA Union upon employment if not already a member.

  • Ability to multi-task while acting decisively under stress and tight deadlines.
  • Experience utilizing social media as a news gathering/reporting tool
  • Ability to make priority decisions under deadline
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Team player who can also work independently and is a self-starter
  • Able to ad-lib effortlessly in various types of situations.
  • Strong live reporting skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including weekends) and to return to work in emergencies depending upon news coverage.
  • Experience editing content on a desktop editing system.
  • Strong desire to deliver news as it develops on all current and future platforms.
  • A sense of urgency and desire to learn emerging technologies.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
