What is a Mux?

A Mux, short for multiplexer, is a device or software component that selects one of several input signals and forwards the selected input to a single output line. In the context of technology and media streaming, Mux often refers to a service or tool that helps manage, encode, and deliver video streams efficiently over the internet. Companies like Mux provide APIs and platforms that make it easier for developers to integrate video streaming and analytics into their applications. The term can also refer to hardware devices used in networking and telecommunications to combine multiple signals for transmission over a single channel.

Job description

About Mux
Mux is video for developers. Our mission is to democratize video by solving the hard problems developers face when building video: video encoding and streaming (Mux Video), video monitoring (Mux Data), and more. Video is a huge part of people's lives, and we want to help make it better.
We're committed to building a healthy team that welcomes diverse backgrounds and experiences. We want people who care about our mission, are ready to grow, believe in our values (from Be Human to Turn Customers Into Fans), and want to improve the people around them.
You'll join a tight-knit team with experience at places like Google, YouTube, Twitch, Reddit, Zencoder, Fastly, and more. Our founders previously started (and sold) Zencoder, an early leader in cloud video technology, and authored Video.js, the biggest HTML5 video player on the web. We organize Demuxed, the premier conference for video engineers in the world.
We're backed by top investors like Coatue, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Y Combinator. You'll get to work with amazing companies: hundreds of startups, plus Strava, Patreon, Vimeo, Robinhood, PBS, and Equinox. Customers, large and small, love working with us and love our team.
We are building something big together. We'd love to hear from you!
About the Role
As a Senior Platform Engineer focused on CI/CD and Developer Productivity at Mux, you'll play a key role in evolving the foundation systems that power our high-traffic, distributed products and in shaping how engineers build, test, and ship them every day. You'll be the force behind a smooth, end-to-end developer experience in our Kubernetes world, wiring together local dev, builds, tests, and deploys into fast reliable pipelines that scale with our Engineering teams.
Our Platform Engineering team works cross-functionally with product engineers to reduce friction and increase confidence from their first line of code to production. In this role, you'll design and run CI/CD systems that improve reliability and velocity across a polyglot monorepo, and partner closely with teams to understand pain points and turn them into delightful, durable tools. Your work will directly influence how quickly we can innovate and how enjoyable that innovation feels for everyone writing and shipping Mux products.
We're looking for a Senior Platform Engineer who loves the craft of building mature, reliable delivery systems, and is excited to accelerate teams as Mux scales from its startup roots. If you're passionate about build systems, deployment automation, developer experience, and pushing the next generation of infrastructure that powers it all, you'll feel right at home here.
What You'll Do
  • Create paved paths from local dev to prod. Build and maintain a cohesive developer journey including local coding environments, build tooling, test workflows, artifact management, and deploy ergonomics so engineers can ship with confidence.
  • Make builds faster, safer, and more observable. Improve performance, reliability, "debuggability", and visibility across our CI/CD stack, ensuring teams understand what's happening and can fix issues quickly.
  • Partner deeply with product engineering teams. Pair with teams to understand friction points, co-design workflow improvements, and deliver tooling that fits real product needs not just theoretical ones.
  • Raise the bar on engineering standards and release quality. Define and evolve best practices for building software, rollout strategies, release automation, and production readiness as Mux scales its delivery maturity.
  • Shape the roadmap for developer productivity. Help prioritize and drive high-impact initiatives that keep Mux shipping quickly today and set us up for the next phase of growth.
Who You Are
  • You're fluent in modern CI/CD and the principles behind it. You've built, operated, and improved real production ready pipelines, and care about the fundamentals: fast feedback, repeatability, safety, and clear ownership.
  • You're a strong software engineer who builds durable systems in a primarily Go ecosystem. You're comfortable shipping and maintaining these tools and you bring solid engineering judgment to everything from APIs to automation.
  • You think in end-to-end developer journeys. You don't just make pipelines "work", you also make them easy to use and dependable day to day. You build shared service abstractions and automation that connect local dev, builds, tests, and deploys into a clear, reliable path to ship on Kubernetes.
  • You've worked on Kubernetes at scale that matters to the business. You've built and run production clusters that host critical-path workloads, and you know how to keep them healthy through upgrades, hardening and incident response.
  • You bring strong infrastructure and networking fundamentals. You have a solid grasp of TCP/UDP, HTTP, TLS, DNS, Linux, and how systems behave under load. You use that knowledge to debug and design better platforms.
  • You operate like a true partner to product teams. You internalize "your problems are our problems," build trust through empathy and follow-through, and enjoy being the multiplier that helps multiple teams succeed.
    Nice to Haves:
  • Experience with our toolchain. Familiarity working with a monorepo, Argo CD, Terraform, skaffold, or similar tools in the cloud native ecosystem helps you ramp fast and shape what's next.
  • Experience in video or high-throughput systems. Background with video ingest/streaming/CDN-style data paths, Kafka-like event streaming, or distributed databases (CockroachDB, ClickHouse) is a plus in our world.
U.S. Benefits
We have a supportive culture that cares about both excellent work and work-life balance. We have office spaces in Downtown San Francisco, New York City, and London.
  • Flexible PTO + 11 company holidays
  • Weekly no-meeting days + quarterly focus weeks
  • Healthy work-life balance encouraged
  • Competitive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Fully funded fertility benefits
  • HSA available, compatible with high deductible plan only ($100 per single employee/month & $200 per family/month employer contribution)
  • FSA available
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • Group life insurance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Medical support concierge service
  • 401(k)
  • Paid parental leave
  • Investment in career growth through professional development stipend
  • Reimbursements for headphones, cell phones, device upgrades, and SVoD services of Mux customers
  • Lunch reimbursement program
