This position provides therapeutic and evidence-based interventions in order to meet the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual, and cultural needs of patients by a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). This position is responsible for developing treatment plans, implementing and evaluating music therapy interventions, and ensuring safe and appropriate therapeutic services are provided.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Use music therapy interventions to treat patients according to individualized treatment plan.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment to meet the needs of each patient and therapeutic milieu served.
  • Performs assessments to determine deficits, strengths, functioning needs, and precautions addressable through music therapy.
  • Determine role of music therapy in treatment, establish treatment goals, and formulate interventions strategies based on assessed needs.
  • Systematic evaluation of therapy results, documentation, and patient discharge planning.
  • Participate as active member of the treatment team.
  • Participate within department/unit for service delivery, quality improvement initiatives, and policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate and assist in procurement of needed resources.
  • May assist in orientation, supervision, and professional development of new staff, students, and music therapy interns.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Ability to articulate the purpose, goals, function, and value of music therapy to patients, families, and interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Care is appropriate to the population served.
  • Ability to implement the proper treatment interventions for individual patients based on assessed needs and limitations. The incumbent communicates with patients and families regarding the program structure and treatment plan and monitors the patient's progress making modifications to services as needed. The incumbent is required to abide by established hospital policies and procedures.
  • In performing daily work responsibilities with patients, the incumbent must constantly monitor safety and be able to foresee problems before they become a crisis. It may be required to address and resolve crisis situations involving patients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit(s). The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelors degree in music therapy or a Music Therapy equivalency.
  • Board certification (MT-BC) through the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Qualifications (Preferred)
Preferred
  • Master's degree in music therapy.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Utah State Certified Music Therapist (SCMT) acquired through DOPL.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Card through the American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care.
