Job description

Superintendent - Commercial Construction

Martin Horn is looking for an experienced Superintendent to run the field on ground-up commercial projects ($10M+). You'll own execution from start through closeout - building the schedule, driving subcontractor coordination, holding the line on quality and safety, and keeping the job on time and on budget.

What makes this different: you'll run your site with real backing. Our superintendents are supported by an in-house shop, PMs and executives who partner with the field instead of second-guessing it, real-time cost data, and a strong pipeline that keeps you building rather than chasing the next job.

Why Join Martin Horn

  • Voted Best Contractor in Charlottesville, building here since 1979
  • A strong self-perform shop behind you on tools, equipment, and manpower
  • PMs and executives who support the field, not manage from a distance
  • A safety-first jobsite culture that has your back
  • A steady pipeline of quality commercial work across Central Virginia
  • A team you'll actually like - UVA games, concerts, and off-site outings, and we give back together

We've built a culture rooted in integrity, trust, and accountability, and we back it up: people are paid well, supported in their growth, and treated like family. With 25 office and 40 field professionals, we hire top talent and empower them to excel.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Own field execution of an assigned commercial project from start through closeout
  • Build and maintain the schedule, including a weekly 3-week look-ahead
  • Run subcontractor coordination and weekly project meetings to keep the job on time and on budget
  • Partner with the shop and PM on preconstruction estimates, budgets, and material/equipment planning
  • Inspect work for quality and progress; report to owners and architects and recommend adjustments
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and inspectors to keep the job compliant with specs, zoning, and permits
  • Own site safety - maintain a secure, healthy jobsite and address any violations promptly
  • Maintain project documentation, daily reports, and as-builts; track the budget and flag variances early

What You Bring

  • 5+ years as a superintendent on ground-up commercial projects ($10M+)
  • A proven ability to lead a large field team - subs, tradespeople, vendors, and field leadership
  • Strong scheduling and look-ahead planning skills
  • A sharp eye for detail and quality, and a problem-solver's instinct
  • Ability to manage client relationships and expectations on site
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Comfort working independently with minimal supervision
  • Excel proficiency; CAD experience a plus
  • Bachelor's in Construction Management or a related field, or equivalent field experience

Perks & Benefits

  • Health, vision, and dental insurance
  • Quarterly bonus program
  • 401K and HSA with company match
  • Responsible Paid Annual Leave (flexible, trust-based time off)
  • Life & disability insurance
  • Vehicle allowance
  • Company gym (24/7 access)
  • Company phone or phone stipend
  • Stocked office kitchen
  • Career development, education, and training; business memberships and dues
  • Tickets to UVA athletics, John Paul Jones Arena and Ting Pavilion performances, and Monticello
  • Off-site social events
