We steward about 15 million objects, photographs, and archival resources that make up the State's collection, and serve tens of thousands of learners of all ages through dynamic programs.
We work with school groups and youth through field trips, day camps, and traveling programs across the state of Colorado. We're home to a free public research center, Colorado's Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP), and the State Historical Fund (SHF), the nation's largest preservation program of its kind. The History Colorado AmeriCorps Program endeavors to address three broad areas of community need across the state: equitable K-12th grade educational outcomes, quality history educational programming, and the tools to preserve and share a more inclusive Colorado history.
This initiative is part of History Colorado's strategic goals to invest in rural prosperity, strengthen education through history, and share the diverse stories of Colorado's past. Their primary focus will be to support and deliver high-impact educational programming to K-12 students, with an emphasis on equitable access to culturally relevant history education. The member will play a key role in facilitating Hands-on History programs, field trips, and other student focused educational experiences. As capacity allows, the AmeriCorps member may also assist with community events, adult educational programming, and broader outreach initiatives.
Terms of Service The Member will serve at the El Pueblo History Museum. The AmeriCorps member will serve for an average of 20 hours per week during the service term, for a minimum of 900 hours over the course of their service term. Flexible hours are required, including occasional evenings.
Members may be expected to commit to weekend hours regularly. The AmeriCorps member will be directly supervised by the Education Coordinator, with additional oversight and support provided by the Program Manager. Service term begins September 8, 2026 and ends August 20, 2027.
Mandatory Orientation on September 8 and 9, 2026 at the History Colorado Museum in Denver. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Facilitate field trips, classroom visits, and other educational activities, tailoring content to be culturally relevant and aligned with academic standards. Create and teach lesson plans for Hands-On History classes aligned with our Hands-On History pillars.
Collaborate with museum staff and community partners to enhance program reach and impact. Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to the continuous improvement of educational programming. Support and facilitate other History Colorado community engagement and story initiative projects as needed.
Service Term Overview: Core Programming & Camps: Academic Year (September 2026 - May 2027): Facilitate weekly Hands-On History (HOH) Friday programs. Winter Break (Late December 2026): Support the HOH Winter Break Camp. Spring Break (March 22-26, 2027): Assist with the HOH Spring Break Camp.
Summer (June - August 2027): Support the HOH Summer Camp, managing both activity facilitation and daily clean-up.
