Major Duties and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for conducting investigations for the Muscogee County Prison.
- Responsible for conducting investigations as directed by the Warden of the facility.
- Responds to and processes crime scenes.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual Investigative Reports.
- This position is responsible for conducting internal and external criminal investigations.
- Conducts criminal investigations of incidents within the Muscogee County Prison.
- Investigates a variety of incidents, including assaults, contraband discovery, possession of contraband, violation of oath, etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Warden.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Investigator will coordinate with state and local law enforcement agencies concerning any inappropriate acts or activities by staff members, officers, contract personnel, and civilians committed on prison grounds or involving an offender assigned to Muscogee County Prison.
- Oversee contraband investigations, investigate intelligence, review videos, phone calls, and video visits as needed.
- Present evidence to the Warden via reports, attend training as scheduled, and testify in court if summoned. Inventory and catalog evidence for storage or disposal.
- Conduct P.R.E.A. (Prison Rape Elimination Act) investigations and report findings to appropriate staff.
- Manage the assessment and classification of the prison gang population. Question: Conducts investigative reports by determining appropriate information, interviewing, researching, and performing other necessary duties to fully understand the nature of intelligence and information.
- Write reports that explain findings from gathered intelligence and information.
- May recommendation appropriate action to the Warden if necessary.
- Acts as liaison between facility investigations, security, and other city departments.
- Review reports written by officers involved in designated incidents utilizing intelligence and information.
- Gather information related to security threat groups and validate gang members according to DOC guidelines.
- Interviews facility staff, city staff, detail officers/inmates as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing arrests, search and seizure, affidavits and warrants, and all aspects of law enforcement.
- Knowledge of court procedures and civil processes.
- Knowledge of the tools and techniques used in criminal investigations.
- Knowledge of criminal arrest warrant procedures.
- Knowledge of GCIC and NCIC rules and regulations.
- Skill in interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects.
- Skill in the operation of a Computer Voice Stress Analyzer.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
- Skill in planning, organizing, problem-solving, and decision-making.
- Skill in the use of office equipment.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Minimum Educational and Training Requirements
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Ten (10) years' experience in correctional, jail and/or detention settings, which may be substituted by experience in a Criminal Justice-related field. Investigative certifications and background preferred. Must have/or be able to complete an approved investigative training program resulting in a certificate of satisfactory completion. Must hold or have the ability to obtain POST certification. Working knowledge of all applicable court orders. Working knowledge of CCG and DOC policies and procedures and applicable state and federal laws. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. Ability to give instructions and have them carried out. Ability to write communications, documents, policies, courtroom defenses, and other required written correspondence. Ability to maintain a high tolerance for mental stress. Ability to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions. Ability to oversee coordinated shakedowns, detail location searches, city vehicle searches, and work outdoors in varied climatic conditions when needed.
Physical Requirements
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

- Speaking - expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.

- Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
- Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
- Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
- Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.
The work is typically performed in an office and at crime scenes. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work may be performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.

Retirement Plan
The Columbus Consolidated Government offers a defined benefit retirement plan to eligible employees who work in General Government and in Public Safety. Employees in the pension plan must meet both age and years of service requirements to qualify for retirement. The current vesting period is ten years, and the current pension contribution rate is 8% of your gross salary.
