Job description

Conway Medical Center (CMC), the #1 rated hospital in SC on Google and a Forbes Best-in-State Employer, is seeking a Pediatric Hospitalist to join our growing and well?supported inpatient pediatrics and newborn care team. This role is ideal for a physician who values transparency, strong clinical support, and a manageable scope of practice in a community hospital setting. 

SCHEDULE & COVERAGE MODEL: 

  • 7 days on / 7 days off 
  • 8 hours in?house per day (8:30 AM 4:30 PM) 
  • 24/7 service coverage with 16 hours of on?call responsibilities 
  • Physician coverage model adjusts based on census and acuity:  
    • Two pediatric hospitalists on site during higher?volume days and peak coverage needs 
    • Single physician coverage during lower?volume, stable census days 
  • Call responsibilities include nurse phone consultations, potential admissions from the Emergency Department, and attending high?risk deliveries or stabilizing sick newborns 
    (calls originate from nursing staff and/or ED providers not from families) 
  • Dedicated call rooms available while on call (optional use; no requirement to remain onsite) 

 SUPPORT & RESOURCES: 

  • APRN support 6 days per week (TuesdaySaturday) 
  • Family Medicine residents assist with well?newborn care 
  • Part?time pediatric hospitalist provides support for high?volume days, call coverage, and vacation coverage 
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) support available 
  • NRP?trained registered nurses attend scheduled C?sections and high?risk deliveries 
  • CRNA coverage available 24/7 for epidurals and urgent/emergent C?sections 
  • Nursery, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Pediatrics all located conveniently on the same floor 

 SCOPE OF PRACTICE: 

  • Daily census ranges from approximately 823 total patients per day 
  • Primary inpatient responsibilities include newborn care:  
    • Majority well newborns 
    • Level II newborns (typical census 14; licensed for up to 6) 
    • Rare Level III cases (e.g., CPAP, hypoglycemia) 
  • Straightforward pediatric admissions, including:  
    • RSV bronchiolitis 
    • Asthma 
    • Gastroenteritis 
    • ENT admissions are rare and infrequently managed under the pediatric hospitalist service 
    • No PICU?level care or complex subspecialty admissions 

 PROCEDURES: 

  • Required Procedures: 
    • Circumcisions 
    • Needle decompression of pneumothorax 
    • Newborn intubation 
    • Newborn catheter placement 
  • Elective / Provider?Dependent Procedures: 
    • Frenotomies 
    • Excision of simple polydactyly 

 LEVEL OF CARE & TRANSFERS: 

  • Level II nursery accepting infants ?32 weeks gestation and ?1500 grams 
  • Capabilities include HFNC, short?term CPAP, IV fluids, IV antibiotics, and NG feeds 
  • Transfers for higher?acuity neonatal care:  
  • McLeod (Level III NICU): within ~2 hours by ground 
  • MUSC (Level IV NICU): ~45 minutes by helicopter 
  • Established and efficient transfer protocols in place 

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 

  • ~1,800-2,000 deliveries annually, with expected growth from Womens Health expansion and regional transfers 
  • Cerner EMR 
  • Team composition:  
    • 2 full?time pediatric hospitalists 
    • 1 part?time (0.8 FTE) pediatric hospitalist 
    • 2 part?time Nurse Practitioners 
  • Candidates must have completed a U.S.?based 3?year pediatric residency 
    (International residencies not accepted)
