Position Details:
  • Compensation: Staff compensated at their regular rate for additional hours. 27 hours per building will be allotted for the Facilitator role which equates to about 45 minutes a week. The role may be split between multiple people.

Duties & Responsibilities: Essential Functions of Position, Major Responsibilities, Summary of Key Duties, Special Assignments, Relationships)
Regular Duties and Responsibilities:
Major Function #1 - Promoting Mock Trial
  • Creates promotional materials and announcements for Mock Trial - including but not limited to spoken announcements at school, information for the eblast, a digital flyer for the school to be emailed to families.
  • Ensures promotional materials are provided to all students/families in their home/preferred language.
Major Function #2 - Hosting the Practices
  • Schedules at minimum a weekly 45-minute practice.
  • If the club meetings take place outside of the instructional day, ensure that guardian permission is obtained to participate.
  • Provide constructive feedback on student performances during practice trials and competitions.
  • Instruct students on case materials, legal procedures, courtroom etiquette, and trial strategies.
  • Accompanies the teams, to school, district, and regional competitions as appropriate.
  • Keeps accurate records of student involvement, attendance, and guardian pick up (if appropriate).
Major Function #3 - Becoming Knowledgeable About the Case/Mock Trial
  • Read the case given out by the Iowa Bar Association.
  • Guide and mentor students as they develop essential critical thinking, public speaking, and legal advocacy skills through simulated courtroom experiences.
  • Prepare students for various roles within the mock trial, including attorneys, witnesses, and courtroom clerks.
  • Support students in developing case theories, witness examinations, opening statements, closing arguments, and legal objections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Education/Experience Required:
  • Relevant Human Services BA Degree obtained, in progress, or 5+ years relevant experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills through various methods.
  • Integrity with confidential student and family information.
  • Skilled with gathering and using data to make informed decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Reflective and receptive of feedback and learning for professional growth.
  • Takes initiative and responsibility for individual and teamwork.
