Multi Unit Director information

What is a multi unit director?

Multi Unit Directors are professionals responsible for overseeing the operations of multiple business locations or units within an organization, commonly in industries like retail, hospitality, or food service. They ensure each unit meets company standards for performance, customer service, and profitability. Multi Unit Directors manage unit managers, coordinate strategic initiatives, and work to achieve overall business goals across their assigned areas. Their role also involves analyzing performance data, implementing best practices, and ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a multi unit director?

To thrive as a Multi Unit Director, you need strong leadership, operational management, and financial acumen, typically backed by a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field and significant multi-site management experience. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, scheduling software, and performance analytics tools is essential. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team development skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are critical for ensuring consistent operational excellence, driving business growth, and leading high-performing teams across multiple locations.

Job description

Store Director Role Profile
At Diventures, safety is our number one priority and fun is our number one goal. We use our passion and the power of water to impact lives, change the world, and have fun doing it! We are seeking a dynamic, high-energy leader to serve as the Store Director over our two Northern Virginia stores in Vienna and Ashburn.
This role will be responsible for building engagement with our scuba community, maintaining a culture of safety, and driving business growth across both locations. The Store Director contributes to the success of Diventures by leading a team of full-time, part-time, and contracted team members to build positive experiences and lasting relationships with our customers.
This role requires a strategic thinker who will split time effectively between both stores. Delivering on our brand promise, the Store Director acts with an owner/operator mentality to ensure our people, programs, and facilities provide a safe, positive, engaging, and exciting environment and experience.
This role is responsible for the total performance of the business unit, made up of sales for scuba instruction, equipment, education, and travel programs. Reporting to the General Manager, the Store Director manages and develops a team of two specialized assistants, a small team of retail salespeople, and a larger team of contracted dive professionals.
In addition to direct customer service (about half of their time is spent on the retail floor), the Store Director is responsible for ensuring safe operation, effective class scheduling and execution, efficient lead generation and conversion, equipment sales, instructor scheduling, product merchandising, inventory management, scuba equipment service, and execution of the store's rental program.
The Store Director also works closely with Diventures Store Support (based in Omaha, Nebraska) to proactively develop new dive professionals and ensure effective succession planning and program growth. A certified pool operator and certified diver (after completion of provided training), the Store Director keeps up to date with and maintains all industry safety and training standards for all pool and offsite diving operations.
To be successful in their role, the Store Director must effectively lead their team in driving the acquisition, conversion, and retention of scuba and travel customers while operating safe, clean, and well-merchandised retail training centers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Multi-Site Leadership & Team Development: Recruit, train, and coach diverse, high-performing teams across both the Ashburn and Vienna locations. This includes overseeing retail sales associates and dive professionals.
  • Cross-Market Business Growth: Drive combined revenue across both locations for scuba instruction, equipment sales, and travel experiences.
  • Financial & Inventory Management: Oversee the profit and loss (P&L), payroll budgets, and costs for both the Ashburn and Vienna stores to maximize profitability.
  • Enterprise Collaboration: Partner closely with our central Store Support team to implement marketing initiatives, lead programs and strategies, and implement required safety policies uniformly across both facilities.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Multi-Unit Management Experience: Proven track record of managing retail or service-based businesses; experience overseeing multiple locations or high-volume facilities is highly preferred.
  • People-First Leadership: Strong ability to lead, delegate to, and unify teams across different physical footprints, ensuring consistent company culture and accountability.
  • Sales & Financial Acumen: Deep understanding of retail metrics, inventory control, and budgeting, with a history of driving sales growth through structured team coaching.
  • Aquatics Passion: Background in the swim or scuba industry is a plus, but not required. You must have a strong desire to learn, as this role requires obtaining your Certified Pool Operator (CPO) credentials and becoming a certified scuba diver (training and certifications available at Diventures).
  • Local Mobility: Ability to regularly commute and balance time between the Vienna and Ashburn facilities based on business needs.
Benefits & Perks
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 3% company match (after one year of service)
  • Generous Team Member Purchase discounts on gear, training, and travel
  • Professional development, scuba certifications, and unique travel opportunities
Key Attributes of the Successful Diventures Store Director
  • Customer-First Mindset
  • Servant Leader
  • Sense of Urgency
  • Initiative
  • Engaging
  • Clear Communicator
  • Tenacity
  • Effective Time Manager
