What does a multi physics modeling engineer do?

A Multi Physics Modeling Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing computational models that simulate the interaction of multiple physical phenomena, such as thermal, structural, fluid, and electromagnetic processes. They use specialized software tools to analyze complex engineering problems that involve more than one type of physical effect. Their work helps in designing products, optimizing performance, and predicting how systems will behave under various conditions. Multi Physics Modeling Engineers often collaborate with other engineers and scientists to validate models and interpret simulation results. This role is crucial in industries like automotive, electronics, aerospace, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a multi physics modeling engineer?

To thrive as a Multi Physics Modeling Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering, mathematics, and physics, typically with a degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering fields. Proficiency in simulation tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS, or MATLAB, as well as experience with CAD and programming languages like Python or C++, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex data and collaborate across disciplines. These skills ensure accurate modeling, efficient project execution, and effective integration of multidisciplinary engineering solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by multi physics modeling engineers in their daily work?

Multi Physics Modeling Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating different physical phenomena—like thermal, mechanical, and electromagnetic processes—within a single simulation environment. Achieving accurate results requires careful selection of models and boundary conditions, as well as significant collaboration with domain experts from various engineering teams. Additionally, optimizing simulations to balance computational efficiency with result fidelity can be complex, especially when dealing with large-scale or real-time applications. Staying updated with the latest software tools and methodologies is also essential to address evolving modeling requirements effectively.

What is the difference between Multi Physics Modeling Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

Job description

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:
  • Leading the design, and development of piezoelectric transducer assemblies and optimization of their performance across acoustic, mechanical, and electrical domains in challenging and variable clamp-on and wetted configurations.
  • Building and validating coupled multi-physics models using tools like COMSOL or OnScale, validating simulation results with experimental data and refining them accordingly.
  • Developing detailed designs and production documentation to meet hazardous area requirements and environmental constraints using SolidWorks, and supporting the creation of thorough and concise assembly and test process documentation for global production teams in SAP
  • Designing and executing experimental validation test plans for prototype builds to ensure performance, reliability, and environmental robustness, and owning the root cause analysis to diagnose and resolve performance gaps.
  • Serving as a technical lead or subject matter expert in piezoelectric transducer design by mentoring junior and cross-functional engineers, contributing to design reviews and engineering standards, and influencing technology direction and best practices across the organization

What We're Looking For:
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in transducer, ultrasonics, or precision electromechanical systems
  • Strong background in multi-physics modeling (COMSOL, OnScale, or similar) and comfortable discussing modelling assumptions, and how material variation and installation conditions impact real-world transducer performance.
  • Hands-on experience with the installation of PZT-based transducers, correlating simulation results with hardware testing and making design decisions based on observed discrepancies
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for mechanical design and documentation
  • Experience moving designs from concept through commercialization and production
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Acoustic wave propagation
    • Mechanical dynamics and vibration
    • Bonding, packaging, and assembly methods
  • Ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, and product teams

Strong Candidates will also have:
  • Experience with flow measurement systems, ultrasonics, or industrial instrumentation
  • Familiarity with hazardous area (e.g., ATEX, IECEx) design constraints
  • Experience designing products for harsh environments
  • Experience with acoustic coupling challenges in pipe-mounted or clamp-on transducer systems
  • Background in system-level performance optimization
  • Experience working with external piezo suppliers and specifying transducer element requirements
  • Prior experience in a lead or technical ownership role

Salary range: $119,700 to $142,900. Several factors contribute to actual salary, including experience in a similar role or performing comparable job responsibilities, skills, training, and other qualifications. Compensation packages also include comprehensive benefits, 401K contribution and match, Paid Time Off, paid holidays, tuition reimbursement and more. Some roles may be eligible for participation in performance-based bonus programs.
