How much do mtm engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for mtm engineering in the United States is $146,868.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $116,500.00 and $173,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is MTM engineering?

MTM engineering typically refers to the application of Methods-Time Measurement (MTM) in industrial engineering. It involves analyzing and improving work processes by breaking down tasks into basic motions and assigning standard times to each motion. This helps organizations optimize productivity, reduce waste, and set accurate labor standards. MTM engineers play a crucial role in manufacturing and production environments, ensuring workflows are efficient and cost-effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MTM engineer?

To thrive as an MTM (Methods-Time Measurement) Engineer, you need strong analytical abilities, process engineering experience, and a background in industrial engineering or a related field. Familiarity with MTM software, time study tools, and lean manufacturing systems is essential, and certification in MTM is often preferred. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help an MTM Engineer effectively optimize processes and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for accurately analyzing work methods, improving efficiency, and supporting productivity improvements in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges MTM engineers face when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

MTM Engineers often work alongside professionals from mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing backgrounds, which can present communication and coordination challenges. Navigating differing technical perspectives and aligning on project goals requires strong interpersonal skills and adaptability. Effective collaboration typically involves regular meetings, clear documentation, and a willingness to learn from other disciplines to ensure project success.

What is the difference between Mtm Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering Technician?

AspectMtm EngineeringMechanical Engineering Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a diploma or associate degree in engineering technologyRequires a diploma or associate degree in mechanical engineering technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and project support in engineering firms or manufacturingAssists engineers in manufacturing, testing, and maintenance in industrial settings
Industry UsageUsed across various engineering sectors including civil, electrical, and mechanicalPrimarily in mechanical and manufacturing industries

While both roles support engineering projects, Mtm Engineering typically involves more design and project planning, whereas Mechanical Engineering Technicians focus on testing, assembly, and maintenance tasks. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the engineering field.

Job description

The Industrial Engineering Manager leads a team responsible for improving production efficiency, quality, and safety across the plant. This role owns line design and optimization, standard work, labor standards, and continuous improvement initiatives (Lean/Six Sigma) to increase throughput, reduce cost, and support ontime delivery. The manager partners closely with Production, Maintenance, Quality, Supply Chain, Safety, and Automation to scale operations and meet customer demand.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Hire, lead, and develop industrial engineers and CI specialists (e.g., 5S, Kaizen, etc..)

  • Set clear goals, coach performance, and build a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

  • Manage engineering project portfolios, timelines, and resource allocation.

Production System & Process Improvement

  • Analyze and optimize production lines using value stream mapping, takt time, line balancing, and bottleneck analysis.

  • Establish and maintain standard work, work instructions, and labor standards (MTM/MOST/time studies).

  • Lead Lean initiatives (5S, visual management, Kanban, TPM) and Six Sigma projects to reduce defects and waste.

Data & Performance Management

  • Build and track KPIs: OEE, firstpass yield, scrap/rework, cycle time, ontime delivery, and labor productivity.

  • Develop dashboards and reports; use statistical tools for root cause analysis and trend insights.

  • Partner with Finance on cost/benefit analyses and ROI for capital and CI projects.

CrossFunctional Collaboration

  • Work with Maintenance/TPM to improve equipment reliability and preventive maintenance plans.

  • Partner with Quality on process capability (CPK), control plans, PFMEA, and corrective actions.

  • Coordinate with Supply Chain for materials flow, supermarket sizing, and warehouse-to-line replenishment.

  • Support EHS on ergonomics and risk reduction; integrate safety into all engineering changes.

Layout, Equipment & Technology

  • Lead plant/line layout design (AutoCAD or similar) for new cells, expansions, and relocations.

  • Evaluate and implement tooling, fixtures, conveyors, robotics, vision systems, and automation to improve throughput and safety.

  • Support MES/LMS integration; ensure accurate data capture for cycle times and work content.

  • Prepare capital requests and lead commissioning/startup of new equipment.

New Product & Change Management

  • Support APQP/NPI: process design, PFMEA, control plans, pilot runs, and rampup to rate.

  • Collaborate on capability studies and PPAP readiness (where applicable).

  • Manage engineering changes with minimal disruption to production and inventory.

Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure processes align with ISO 9001 and internal policies.

  • Maintain documentation: SOPs, standard work, layout drawings, process maps, and training materials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or related field (Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering).

  • 5+ years of manufacturing/industrial engineering experience, including shopfloor projects.

  • 2+ years leading engineers or crossfunctional project teams.

  • Handson experience with Lean, Six Sigma, time studies, and line balancing.

  • Proficiency with data analysis (Excel/BI), CAD for layout (AutoCAD or similar), and basic statistics.

  • Strong communication skills; able to influence at all levels from operators to executive leadership.

Key Competencies

  • Datadriven problem solving and statistical thinking.

  • Change leadership and project management (scope, schedule, cost).

  • Coaching, training, and standard work discipline.

  • Crossfunctional collaboration and stakeholder management.

  • Safety and ergonomics mindset.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily plantbased with frequent time on the production floor.

  • PPE required as per area standards; ability to stand/walk for extended periods.
