Summary:

The Process Engineer is responsible for making sure the oven and activation areas are meeting goals for throughput, yield, and equipment uptime. They also ensure high-quality products are manufactured in a safe and efficient manner. The position will also maintain control of the manufacturing process. As a member of the production team, the Process Engineer provides daily operations support on a technical level while managing a portfolio of engineering projects and production equipment. The process engineer functions as the technical communicator between the operations and other functional departments of the company. Responsible for ensuring continuous improvement in all aspects of work performed.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensure oven and activation processes produce product to meet the requirements and standards of the manufacturing operation
  • Improve or optimize machine and other process parameters to produce the highest quality product at the lowest cost
  • Maintain effective collection systems for materials, production, and product data to facilitate engineering analysis
  • Ensure key production metrics are being met and any problems or issues are promptly addressed
  • Analyze all information related to the operation and drive continuous improvement of product and process performance
  • Lead technical efforts to troubleshoot machine, tooling, and material issues
  • Work independently or in conjunction with other organizational elements to analyze and drive corrective and preventive actions for issues
  • Assist in the development of new products and processing parameters
  • Lead qualification efforts for new products, processes, or materials within the assigned operation
  • Ensure that plant standard operations are properly documented, effective, and reflect best practices
  • Build process knowledge and continuous improvement gains into documentation and training systems
  • Ensure manufacturing quality control plan is being followed and is effective
  • Ensure non-conformance and quality issues are effectively resolved in a timely manner
  • Monitor and troubleshoot production equipment
  • Facilitate spare parts ordering, vendor communication, and drawing control
  • Perform job and process hazard analysis, safety audits, etc.
  • Identify training needs impacting operational performance and verify that these are met
  • Act as a technical communication link to other departments and organizations
  • Effectively interact and collaborate with other departments including Development, Quality, Laboratory, Maintenance, etc.
  • Work with vendors and contractors as required to achieve the objectives
  • Support operations and facility during off hours for process emergencies and technical support

Requirements:

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • B.S. in Ceramic, Chemical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering or a related engineering or scientific field
  • Excellent problem analysis and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent understanding of how to apply Process Control and Process Discipline concepts
  • Strong organizational and work planning skills
  • Basic knowledge of statistics as it relates to data analysis and process control of operations
  • Experience with MS office products, especially the use of Excel applications for data analysis
  • Mechanical aptitude with hands on experience
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively independently and to multi-task

Preferred Skills and Knowledge:

  • Two or more years’ experience in ceramic materials manufacturing or with materials preparation technology
  • Experience with industrial kilns & ovens or chemical dipping processes
  • Understanding of basic ceramic materials properties and their effects on materials preparation operations
  • Experience in defining and conducting engineering experiments with multiple factors and responses
  • Demonstrated experience with analyzing data and generating actions based on experimentation
  • Familiarity with MS Access, Minitab, SharePoint and MES.
