Position Overview
We are seeking for Minnesota Department of Information Technology Services (MNIT), in partnership with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), is seeking an experienced Azure Database Engineer to support the State's Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System (CCWIS) modernization initiative.
As part of this initiative, the State is consolidating data from 87 county databases into a centralized Azure Data Lake to support the implementation of a new CCWIS solution. The selected candidate will play a critical role in designing, developing, implementing, and supporting Azure-based database and data lake solutions, with a primary focus on the Azure Data Lakehouse and integrated data repositories.
This role requires strong expertise in Azure database technologies, cloud infrastructure, data engineering, security, disaster recovery, and mentoring technical teams.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, implement, and support relational and non-relational databases in Microsoft Azure.
  • Build, administer, maintain, and optimize Azure Data Lakes and Azure Data Lakehouse environments.
  • Develop and implement scalable data transformation solutions.
  • Design efficient data access patterns to optimize system performance.
  • Administer Azure database environments to ensure high availability, reliability, and performance.
  • Implement backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies using Azure technologies.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, encryption, and compliance with State security standards.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to implement secure cloud infrastructure and data solutions.
  • Develop, maintain, and update technical documentation.
  • Support data migration efforts from multiple county databases into a centralized Azure Data Lake.
  • Monitor database performance and troubleshoot issues using Azure monitoring tools.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.
  • Provide ongoing operational support for Azure databases and data platforms.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other Database Engineers.
  • Perform knowledge transfer and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Strong experience designing, developing, and implementing Azure Data Lakes and Azure relational/non-relational databases.
  • Experience with Azure Databricks.
  • Experience working with Oracle Databases.
  • Strong experience developing and implementing cloud-based data transformation solutions.
  • Experience developing scripts and programs to load data using Azure data load utilities.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Solid understanding of cloud computing concepts and Azure architecture.
  • Experience using Azure tools including:
    • Azure Monitor
    • Azure Data Factory
    • SQL Analytics
    • Query Performance Insight
    • Azure Resource Manager (ARM)
    • Azure CLI / PowerShell
  • Experience implementing backup and disaster recovery strategies using Azure Backup and Geo-Replication.

  • 7+ years of experience designing, developing, and implementing Azure Data Lakes and Azure database solutions.

  • Experience supporting large-scale cloud modernization and enterprise data migration initiatives.
  • Experience working within government or large enterprise environments.
