Mri Coil Engineer information

What are some typical challenges faced by MRI Coil Engineers during the development process?

MRI Coil Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing coil performance with patient comfort and safety. Designing coils that provide optimal signal-to-noise ratios while minimizing interference and staying within industry safety regulations requires close collaboration with physicists, radiologists, and manufacturing teams. Additionally, integrating new materials or technologies to enhance imaging capabilities can introduce complexities in testing and quality assurance. Overcoming these challenges demands a combination of technical expertise, attention to detail, and effective teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MRI Coil Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MRI Coil Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, RF design, and physics, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, electromagnetic simulation tools (such as CST or ANSYS), and compliance with safety standards is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure the development of reliable, high-performance MRI coils that meet safety and diagnostic requirements.

What are MRI Coil Engineers?

MRI Coil Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and maintain the radiofrequency (RF) coils used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines. These coils are crucial components that transmit and receive signals during MRI scans, directly affecting image quality. MRI Coil Engineers work closely with physicists, radiologists, and manufacturers to innovate and troubleshoot coil designs for improved safety and performance. Their expertise helps ensure accurate diagnostic imaging and advances in medical technology.

What is the difference between Mri Coil Engineer vs Mri Technologist?

AspectMri Coil EngineerMri Technologist
Primary FocusDesign, develop, and optimize MRI coils and hardware componentsOperate MRI machines, acquire images, and assist in patient diagnosis
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or related field; certifications in MRI technology are commonAssociate's or bachelor's degree in radiologic technology; ARRT certification often required
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, medical device companies, engineering teamsHospitals, imaging centers, clinics
Industry UsageMedical device manufacturing, research and developmentMedical imaging services, patient care

While Mri Coil Engineers focus on designing and developing MRI hardware components, Mri Technologists operate MRI machines to capture images for diagnosis. Both roles require specialized knowledge of MRI technology, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Job Description SummaryWe're looking for a Lead Sourcing Engineer to help bring a next-generation MRI technology-our Gradient Coil platform-to market.
In this role, you'll lead sourcing strategy for a critical new product introduction (NPI), partnering closely with engineering to build the supply base from the ground up. You'll work at the intersection of engineering, suppliers, and manufacturing-playing a key role early in the product development process to ensure we deliver high-quality, innovative products on time and at the right cost.
This is a hands-on, highly collaborative role with the opportunity to directly influence product design, supplier strategy, and the successful launch of a new MR platform.
Location: Florence, SC - hybrid (3+ days on site)
Travel: Up to 20% (domestic)
Relocation: Available
Sponsorship: Not available for this roleJob Description

What You'll Do

  • Lead sourcing strategy and execution for new product introduction (NPI) programs-from early design through production launch
  • Partner closely with engineering teams to shape supplier strategy, selection, and early design decisions
  • Identify, evaluate, and onboard suppliers that meet technical, quality, and cost requirements
  • Participate in design reviews, providing input on manufacturability, cost optimization, and supplier feasibility
  • Drive cost optimization initiatives, including should-cost analysis and supplier negotiations
  • Balance cost, quality, and innovation in sourcing decisions
  • Bring forward supplier capabilities, new technologies, and ideas to support product development
  • Own ongoing supplier performance, including quality, delivery, and cost metrics
  • Proactively identify and mitigate supplier-related risks
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, project management, sourcing, and manufacturing teams
  • Support and expand early supplier involvement (ESI) capabilities within MR
  • Ensure suppliers meet all quality and regulatory requirements

What We're Looking For (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in sourcing, supplier engineering, manufacturing, or supply chain within a technical environment
  • Hands-on experience working with engineering specifications, technical drawings, and product requirements
  • Experience working directly with suppliers (sourcing, supplier quality, manufacturing, or similar)
  • Proven ability to understand and communicate technical requirements across engineering teams and suppliers
  • Experience leading or owning sourcing efforts for new product introduction (NPI) or product development programs
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a regulated manufacturing environment (medical device preferred; aerospace, automotive, or similar also considered)
  • Experience with complex components or assemblies
  • Experience driving cost reduction initiatives and supplier negotiations

Why This Role

  • Work on next-generation MRI technology that directly impacts patient care
  • Influence product design early-not just execution after decisions are made
  • Shape supplier strategy and bring innovation into the development process
  • Collaborate with a highly technical, mission-driven team
  • Opportunity to grow within a global organization

Location & Benefits

  • Florence, SC (onsite) - relocation support available
  • Competitive salary range + annual bonus
  • Full GE HealthCare benefits package
  • Strong career growth and internal mobility opportunities

A Note to Candidates

We know not every candidate will meet every qualification-and that's okay. If your experience is close and you're excited about the opportunity, we encourage you to apply.
