Job Description

The Sorter (MRF) safety and efficiently operates their assigned Work Station in a safe, effective and efficient manner at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to achieve operational targets. When assigned to sort materials, sorts products on a moving conveyor line to meet quality and productivity expectations. Maintains work area in a clean and effective manner at all times. When assigned to clean screens and/or conveyors, may be required to work at heights and/or in confined spaces using hand tools to clean equipment. Required to perform housekeeping tasks as assigned. The incumbent trains and assists other members of their crew as required. Incumbent is required to work 8-hour shifts, either day or evening shifts.

This position operates within a COR certified plant environment (which is a requirement of our Contract) and is required to comply with all regulatory requirements and the Client’s Environmental Management System. The facility operates up to 17 hours per day, potentially 7 days per week.

Key Responsibilities: 

The duties of the Sorter (MRF) are as follows, but not limited to:

  1. Understands and promotes the Company’s, the Division’s, the Plant’s, and the Department’s mission statement, values, and strategic goals.
  2. Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.
  3. Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, and other Company departments and staff. Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.
  4. Promotes a quality-first work ethic and attitude to provide a product that is processed to the highest standard achievable.
  5. Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  6. Understands, complies with, and is accountable for adherence to COR quality standards in all activities.
  7. Manages assigned work station/tasks within scope of responsibility so all Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and operational targets are achieved.
  8. Safely and efficiently operates all assigned (both as primary as well as for relief coverage) unit equipment and process(es) as outlined in the applicable SOP syllabus.
  9. Advises Lead Hand/ Supervisor when production targets will not be met and provide explanation of shortfalls and actively participate in the development of productivity improvement initiatives.
  10. Conducts maintenance checks on equipment.
  11. Maintains a high-level of cleanliness within the assigned Unit(s) as instructed.
  12. Diligently works on and completes assigned training plan and achieves competency for all aspects of the assigned Unit(s) within agreed-upon timelines. Continually works to enhance operational skills. With prior approval and when opportunities exist, commences training in other Units of the plant.
  13. Clean screens and /or conveyors when assigned. May be required to work at heights and/or in confined spaces using hand tools to clean equipment.
  14. Seeks opportunities to simplify and improve work methods and presents them to Lead Hand/Supervisor for approval.
  15. Participates in the development of strategies to improve productivity, lower downtime and operating costs, and add value to the MRF.
  16. Provides training and mentoring of other team members and personnel as assigned.
  17. Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement.
  18. Completes other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Experiences: 

  • No prior sorting or automated production line experience is required, however is preferred.
  • Ability to work at a moving conveyor line sorting product while meeting target expectations.
  • Ability to be attentive to details to meet safety and quality standards
  • Effective English language communication skills to verbally communicate, understand, comprehend, and comply with all job requirements
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to work 8-hour shifts, either day or evening, as the facility operates up to 17 hours per day, 7 days per week; must have own transportation.
  • Ability to wear respirator when required to meet safety guidelines due to dusty environment.
  •  Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including negative alcohol and drug test, pre-employment medical, and immunizations.

Work Hours: 

The Sorter (MRF)’s hours of work are:

  • Hours of Work: 8 hours/shift; 6:00 am – 2:30 pm Day Shift; 8 hours/shift 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm Afternoon Shift
  • Lunch Break: 30 minute unpaid
  • Rest Breaks: 15 minutes paid, both morning and afternoon
  • Base hours : 40 hours per week ; 2,080 hours per year
  • Scheduled Work Days: Monday to Friday
  • Overtime: Availalability to work overtime is required, primarily on Saturdays

Working Environment: 

  • Works directly in a Recycling Plant; required to climb stairs, work at heights or in confined spaces, and be exposed to various industrial hazards such as but not limited to noise, fumes, chemicals, process gases, bloodborne and other pathogens. Proper PPE will be offered by the company.
  • Exposed to mobile equipment, moving equipment, and electrical hazards.
  • Exposed to hot and cold working environments.
  • Required to do heavy lifting and carrying, up to 49 pounds, a number of times per shift.
