Job description

Company Overview:

MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification.

We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control.

We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation.

Position Overview:

The Senior Applications Engineer will have a technical background and will understand how customers use the unique properties of rare earth permanent magnets across a variety of end use applications. They will be familiar with the broad range of chemical, thermal, and mechanical, and thermal processes used to produce magnets, magnet assemblies, and electric motors. They will be experienced at working with customers in the design and quoting process. They will also have experience building the underlying tools and systems to support these processes. In addition to responding to requests from current and prospective customers, the successful candidate will play a critical role in identifying current and future product value by synthesizing customer needs and market trends. This is an opportunity to be a part of building our team, our factory, and our culture as the Magnetics team helps to define the future of American manufacturing.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Act as the permanent magnet subject matter expert with existing and potential customers in reviewing requests for quotes and other requests for information; interpreting customer requests into well-defined product requirements.
  • Lead cross-functional project execution to integrate MP magnets into customer applications:
    1. Engage with customer technology teams to understand, communicate, and negotiate product requirements with customers.
    2. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to provide customers with samples and prototypes.
    3. Synthesize and communicate short and long duration customer project goals based on current business conditions and evolving customer and market needs.
  • Develop, deploy, and continuously improve tools for the effective and timely quoting of new products; train and support the sales team as needed in the use of the tools.
  • Identify value opportunities for MP Materials products, to be realized through applications engineering, product or process development, continuous improvement activities, and/or long-term strategic initiative.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or higher in mechanical or electrical engineering, or other relevant engineering disciplines.
  • 5+ years in as an applications engineer.
  • Working knowledge of magnetic properties and experience specifying rare earth permanent magnet grades for applications such as traction motors, actuators, and sensors including end use applications and key performance metrics.
  • Experience working directly with external customers to understand technical needs and translate them into operational actions and product specifications.
  • Experience partnering with commercial teams to generate product specifications and quotations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a spectrum of different roles, from customers to senior leaders to manufacturing operators.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare well-written documents for reporting to customers and leadership.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Expert level user of Microsoft Office suite.

Desired Qualities:

  • Hands-on experience in materials manufacturing, ideally the manufacturing of rare earth materials, permanent magnets, and/or ceramic and metal powders.
  • Experience conducting market studies to evaluate, interpret and forecast design trends and component requirements for electric machines.
  • Advanced degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or materials science.
