Job description


The Second Judicial District is currently accepting applications for a Self-Help Center Supervisor.
The Self-Help Center (SHC) Supervisor will work in the Self-Help Center (SHC) located in Ramsey County's City Hall Building, with some remote work available. The SHC helps Self-Represented Litigants (SRLs) by providing a variety of legal and procedural information related to court policies, procedures, processes, and forms, without providing legal advice regarding legal issues that can be addressed in District Court. This position will supervise other SHC staff and reports to the District's Juvenile / Family Division Administrator.
Responsibilities:
The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform
  • Oversee daily Self-Help Center operations for compliance with Minnesota Court Rules, General Rules of Practice, Rule 110. Self-Help Programs.
  • Supervise a team working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, both in-person and remotely.
  • Works in tandem with court administration staff across divisions to provide consistent customer service.
  • Perform supervisory duties including hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Provide legal information to SRLs in a variety of settings: in-person, over the phone, via email and web-based technologies.
  • Provide information on available legal resources and legal information such as court procedures, legal requirements, forms, and how to prepare for court.
  • Train court staff, paralegals, law clerks and judicial officers in best practices for assisting SRLs, particularly in the Family law area.
  • Collaborate with District and State Court Administration, other operational divisions, and the Bench to improve overall processing of SRL cases and enhance court efficiency through committees, workgroups and other means.
  • Identify unmet needs and propose solutions pertaining to SRLs in District Court.
  • Develop new forms and instructions, educational approaches, website content, and new approaches to leverage technology to improve access to justice and enhance court efficiency.
  • Serve as a resource to the volunteer attorneys and volunteer law students serving SRLs at law clinics.

Minimum Qualifications
The Minnesota Judicial Branch recognizes the diverse set of skills, strengths, and attributes that an individual may bring into a role. If you have any combination of the experience, training, and education required for this position, please consider applying.
  • Possession of a law degree from an accredited college or university
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Admission to the Bar of the State of Minnesota.
  • Three to five years of experience in a court or legal setting
  • Three to five years of lead work or supervisory experience
  • Successful candidate will be required to pass a Criminal Background Check, prior to appointment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of local legal resources.
  • Fluency in a second language other than English, such as Spanish, Somali, Hmong, Oromo, Amharic, or American Sign Language.
  • At least two years of experience as an attorney, law clerk, or other professional in the Family Law area.
  • Two years' experience as a practicing attorney in private or public practice, or as a Judicial Law Clerk.
  • Experience as a supervisor of professional employees.
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience creating or reviewing educational materials on legal topics appropriate for web content.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to create forms, instructions, and educational materials on legal topics for non-lawyers.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment.
  • Ability to simplify legal concepts and terminology to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with SRLs.
  • Knowledge of issues facing people experiencing homelessness, violence, and poverty.
  • Ability to work in an inclusive, multicultural environment that values diversity and relationships.
  • Experience providing exceptional customer service.

Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting, at a public counter or remote location. Work involves contact with persons who may be angry and confused.
Physical Demands
Work is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, standing, bending, and carrying items up to 25 pounds. Some assignments may require periods of extended sitting, standing, or computer use. May require standing on a ladder to retrieve files from high shelves, moving records and exhibits up and down stairs.
