Job description

School Bus Driver

Reports to: Coordinator of Transportation

General Definition of Work: Performs intermediate semiskilled work driving a school bus, picking up and delivering students to/from school, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Coordinator of Transportation.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of school bus; reports operating and equipment deficiencies
  • Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; records activities on the bus; reviews tapes as necessary
  • Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations
  • Transports children to/from school, sporting events, special events and field trips
  • Fuels bus as required
  • Washes bus; cleans bus inside and out
  • Records mileage; maintains various timesheets, records and prepares a variety of reports on activities

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and bodily fluids; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

High school diploma preferred or high school equivalency certificate required and minimal experience operating motorized equipment. General knowledge of the problems involved in operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, parents, students and the general public.

A valid commercial driver's license with School Bus endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
