Lead Electrical Controls Engineering Manager

Location: Overland Park, KS or Lawrence, KS

A growing engineering and manufacturing organization specializing in custom industrial automation and engineered systems is seeking a Lead Electrical Controls Engineering Manager to lead its Controls Engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering leader who enjoys managing people while remaining technically engaged in the design and execution of complex automation projects.

The organization develops and delivers custom engineered equipment and integrated control systems for a diverse range of industrial clients. You'll play a key role in driving engineering excellence, standardization, project execution, and team development while working closely with project management, manufacturing, and field service teams.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of electrical controls engineers and designers.
  • Oversee the design and development of electrical control systems for custom industrial equipment.
  • Establish engineering standards, best practices, and design consistency across projects.
  • Review electrical drawings, control panel designs, and system architecture.
  • Direct PLC, HMI, and industrial network design efforts.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout project execution, from concept through startup and commissioning.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering, manufacturing, project management, and field service teams.
  • Interface with customers to define technical requirements and develop engineering solutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex automation and controls issues during commissioning and startup.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for engineering processes and product standardization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of industrial controls engineering experience.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising engineering teams.
  • Strong experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell preferred).
  • Experience with HMI and SCADA development.
  • Knowledge of industrial networking and control system architecture.
  • Ability to read and develop electrical schematics and control panel layouts.
  • Experience with industrial automation equipment, integrated manufacturing systems, or custom machinery.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and project management skills.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience designing custom automation or engineered systems.
  • Servo motion control and VFD integration.
  • Instrumentation and process controls.
  • Control panel design and UL508A familiarity.
  • Field startup and commissioning experience.
  • Experience supporting complex manufacturing, processing, distribution, or industrial facility projects.
