Chief Development Officer (Temporary)

Location: Washington, DC

Employment Type: Temporary (Approximately 5 Months)

Target Start Date: August 2026 or September 2026

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization, is seeking an experienced Chief Development Officer (Temporary)to provide critical leadership and operational support during a transition within its Development team. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this role will oversee key fundraising initiatives, lead the planning and execution of the organization's signature fundraising event, and ensure development operations continue running smoothly through the end of the year.

This is a hands-on opportunity for a seasoned nonprofit development professional who is comfortable managing fundraising operations, donor engagement, event execution, and cross-functional collaboration in a fast-paced environment.

Please note: This is a temporary assignment with an anticipated duration of approximately five months. There is no opportunity for permanent hire.

Key Responsibilities

Development & Fundraising Leadership

  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Development function during a leadership transition.
  • Monitor and track online and offline donations, ensuring accuracy across fundraising systems and reports.
  • Maintain the annual revenue tracker and development database.
  • Prepare and distribute timely donor acknowledgment communications.
  • Partner with Accounting to reconcile donations and support financial reporting.
  • Track unrestricted fundraising revenue and assist with year-end reporting and board preparation.
  • Maintain donor records and support ongoing stewardship initiatives.
  • Coordinate communications with donor affinity groups and key stakeholders.
  • Assist with donor prospect research and fundraising initiatives.

Signature Fundraising Event

Lead planning and execution of the organization's premier fundraising event for approximately 200 attendees, including:

  • Managing all event logistics from planning through execution.
  • Serving as the primary liaison with venues, caterers, photographers, and other vendors.
  • Coordinating invitations, registrations, RSVP tracking, sponsorship communications, and guest management.
  • Managing VIP logistics and executive communications.
  • Developing and maintaining event timelines and Run of Show documentation.
  • Coordinating volunteers and day-of-event operations.
  • Managing sponsorship tracking and recognition.
  • Monitoring event budgets and partnering with Accounting to process invoices and payments.
  • Coordinating closely with internal stakeholders to ensure a successful event experience.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5โ€“7 years of nonprofit development or fundraising experience
  • Demonstrated success planning and executing fundraising events
  • Strong experience with donor stewardship, fundraising operations, and gift processing
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities
  • Experience maintaining fundraising databases and donor records
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

Preferred

  • Experience with online fundraising and donor management platforms such as Network for Good or similar systems
  • Experience supporting fiscal year-end fundraising reporting
  • Experience coordinating executive meetings and stakeholder communications
