What is a mom?

Moms, or mothers, are women who have given birth to, adopted, or are raising children. They play a vital role in nurturing, supporting, and guiding their children through various stages of life. Moms often balance multiple responsibilities, including caregiving, managing the household, and sometimes working outside the home. Their roles and experiences can vary greatly based on cultural, social, and individual factors.

What are some common challenges moms face when balancing parenting with returning to the workforce, and how can employers support them?

Moms returning to the workforce often face challenges such as managing childcare responsibilities, adapting to new workplace technologies, and rebuilding professional networks. Many find it helpful when employers offer flexible work arrangements, such as remote options or adaptable hours, and provide resources like parental support groups or mentorship programs. Open communication with managers and access to training can also ease the transition and support ongoing professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mom, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mother, you need strong caregiving abilities, organizational skills, and a deep understanding of child development, typically gained through personal experience and self-education. Familiarity with parenting resources, scheduling tools, and basic healthcare practices is helpful for managing daily family life. Patience, emotional intelligence, and effective communication are essential soft skills for nurturing relationships and resolving challenges within the household. These skills and qualities are important to ensure a supportive, healthy environment that fosters family well-being and child growth.

While Moms often provide informal, unpaid care within their homes, childcare providers are trained professionals working in licensed settings. Parents may search for Moms for personal, flexible care, whereas they look for childcare providers when seeking professional, reliable services.

Job description

We're seeking English speaking volunteers to help us bring English Conversation practice to Afghan moms. This is a new project for Gii, and it's only possible with the support of dedicate volunteers. Our ELI teacher will provide instruction, we need volunteers to watch below-school-age children while moms are occupied (all onsite together) and after instruction, join the ladies to practice what they've learned.

Afghan women are socially crippled by their lack of English and are very motivated to learn! Help us meet this critical need by volunteering to join our refugee and immigrant ladies once or twice per week, helping them to learn useful phrases, practice pronunciation and build confidence. You will delight in their enthusiasm and determination!

Volunteers don't need a background in teaching! This is a conversation club, women in this group have different levels of fluency and this group is an opportunity to practice speaking. If you enjoy young children, are fluent English speaker and have time to share, then you can make a big impact on a woman's life.

For more information, fill out the inquiry form and we will invite you to an online orientation to learn more about this opportunity.

Where: Northeast Austin, near 183 and 290

When: weekly Tue and Thurs 1-2:30

Volunteers have the option to choose one or two shifts per week.
