What is a Mohs dermatologist?

A Mohs dermatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in performing Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise technique for treating certain types of skin cancer, most commonly basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. This procedure involves removing thin layers of cancer-containing skin and examining them under a microscope until only cancer-free tissue remains. Mohs dermatologists are specially trained in dermatology and pathology, allowing them to both surgically remove the cancer and evaluate the tissue margins during the procedure. This technique offers the highest cure rates and preserves as much healthy tissue as possible, making it especially useful for sensitive areas like the face.
