What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Modeling and Simulation Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modeling and Simulation Specialist, you need strong analytical skills, a solid foundation in mathematics and statistics, and typically a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software (such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Arena), programming languages (like Python or C++), and sometimes certifications in modeling tools are highly valuable. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are soft skills that help professionals interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate model development, insightful analysis, and successful application of simulations to real-world problems.

How do professionals in Modeling Simulation typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Modeling Simulation professionals often work closely with engineers, software developers, analysts, and project managers to develop accurate models and simulations for various applications. Collaboration usually involves gathering requirements, integrating domain expertise, validating simulation results, and refining models based on feedback. Regular meetings and iterative development cycles are common, helping ensure that models align with project goals and stakeholder needs. This interdisciplinary approach is essential for delivering robust solutions and often leads to valuable learning and career growth opportunities.

What is modeling and simulation in a professional context?

Modeling and simulation is the process of creating and using digital models to represent real-world systems, processes, or phenomena in order to analyze and predict their behavior. Professionals in this field use specialized software and mathematical techniques to simulate scenarios, test hypotheses, and optimize performance without the risk or expense of real-world experimentation. This approach is widely used in industries such as engineering, defense, healthcare, and manufacturing to improve decision-making, training, and system design.

What jobs make 3000 a month without a degree?

In modeling simulation, entry-level roles such as simulation technician or junior modeler can sometimes pay around $3,000 per month, especially with relevant technical skills and experience. Other related positions like CAD drafter or quality assurance tester may also reach this income level without requiring a degree, depending on the industry and location.

What is the difference between Modeling Simulation vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectModeling SimulationMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, computer science, or related fields; proficiency in simulation softwareBachelor's or higher in mechanical engineering; often professional engineering license
Work EnvironmentSoftware development, research labs, engineering firmsManufacturing plants, design offices, R&D departments
Industry UsageDesign validation, system analysis, virtual prototypingProduct design, testing, manufacturing processes
Common Search/ComparisonModeling Simulation vs Mechanical Engineer

Modeling Simulation specialists focus on creating virtual models and running simulations to analyze system behaviors, often requiring programming skills and software expertise. Mechanical Engineers design, develop, and test physical products and systems, utilizing their engineering knowledge in practical applications. While both roles overlap in engineering principles, Modeling Simulation emphasizes virtual analysis, whereas Mechanical Engineering centers on physical product development.

Job description

Job Title: Modeling & Simulation Specialist | AFSIM Gunslinger
Location: Colorado Springs, CO
This position is open for an AFSIM Developer or AFSIM Analyst. All applicants must meet the general requirements listed below to be considered for either role. Additional requirements specific to the AFSIM Developer role are indicated throughout the description; candidates meeting these additional qualifications will be considered for the Developer role.
Who You Are:
Much like your counterparts in the Old West, you are not one to be trifled with. You're as fearsome as Billy the Kid and as good a shot as Annie Oakley. Your instincts are unrivaled and your brand of justice final. Your weapons of choice; math, multi-lingual programming languages, and caffeine...lots of caffeine.
As AFSIM Gunslinger, your job is to tell customers what the modeling and simulation framework can do, could do, and won't do. You should understand the framework architecture so well that others think you invented it or were present when the GOTS tool was born. You should know how to integrate models from other tools and frameworks much like the outlaws of old who used many weapons as part of a greater arsenal. From that knowledge, depth, and breadth of understanding, you've gained a reputation as a cold-blooded developer capable of meeting deliverable times, hunting down and finding complex scripting issues, and sniffing-out trouble in proposed engineering solutions. You detest proprietary solutions from other vendors and reject them with great force.
Who We Are:
Infinity Labs is an innovation-driven company with world-class expertise in the defense and national security sectors. Infinity provides cutting-edge engineering technologies and solutions, including modeling, simulation, and analysis (MS&A), research and development (R&D), cyber operational technology, and training. Our extensive project portfolio covers a vast range of physical scales and applications, from materials and components to subsystems, platforms, and systems of systems. We integrate science and systems as part of our overall solutioning approach and we investigate advanced concepts and technologies with disruptive application potential. The sophistication of our work directly reflects the ingenuity and proficiency of our team. Our workforce shapes the future, and our employees are our greatest asset.
What You'll Do:
  • Configure digital representations of complex military systems to support operational utility, asset vulnerability, system integration, and concept of operations assessments within a synthetic simulation environment.
  • Work with domain experts to understand the nuances of specific systems (or classes of systems) and use abstraction techniques to model them at the mission-level.
  • Assemble known information when available and use engineering judgement to fill in the blanks to represent real world hardware, software, or processes used in military operations.
  • You must be able to manage your time effectively and interface with customers regularly. In addition, beyond simply meeting project milestones and deadlines, the ideal candidate sees modeling & simulation as a tool to empower decision makers and provides capabilities at the speed of relevance rather than endlessly pursuing "the perfect model".
  • Coordinate with other model specialist and developers to plug capabilities into a greater system-of-systems environment used to analyze large scale mission vignettes. In the process, you will become a subject matter expert in the system types that you model.
  • If this position is listed as onsite, you will regularly collaborate with teammates and/or clients in person.

Additional responsibilities for Developer role:
  • Modify simulation frameworks to add functionality required to fully assess models and scenarios.
  • Develop new software plug-ins to increase simulation framework capability.

Minimum Qualifications/What You'll Bring:
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience using the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM) to model systems and systems of systems
  • Verifiable experience supporting government (military) programs
  • Proficiency in applying modeling & simulation techniques to support the decision-making process

Additional qualifications for Developer role:
  • Industry experience with C++ development (preferably with C++ 11 or higher)

Education/Credentials:
  • BS or BA degree in a math, physics, or engineering discipline
  • US Citizenship is required for consideration, as this job requires US government security clearance.
    • Nice to have - Secret level clearance
    • Acceptable - No current clearance but eligibility to obtain

Nice to Haves:
  • Advanced degree in math, physics, or engineering
  • Familiarity with using a high-level language such as Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or Julia
  • Familiarity with the AFSIM community and know where to find data/POCs if needed
  • Experience modifying the AFSIM framework through the development of new plugins
  • Deep understanding of the World Simulation Framework
  • You can explain what a component-based architecture is
  • You understand the terms native model, plugin, extension, command syntax, and scripting in an AFSIM context
  • You can explain what an Application, Scenario, and Simulation are and why they are important
  • Experience with other mission-level simulation frameworks

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position and work on a computer for prolonged periods

This job description provides a high-level review of the responsibilities of the position and is not intended to be a complete list of all responsibilities, duties or skills that may be required for the job. The job description is subject to review and change at any time and other job-related duties or requirements may be assigned as necessary.
