What does a modeling simulation engineer do?

A Modeling Simulation Engineer develops virtual models and simulations to analyze complex systems and processes. They use mathematical models, computer simulations, and data analysis to predict system performance and optimize designs before physical implementation. These engineers typically work in industries like aerospace, defense, automotive, and healthcare to improve efficiency, safety, and decision-making. Their role often involves coding, algorithm development, and working with simulation software to test real-world scenarios in a virtual environment.

What are the typical responsibilities and project stages for a modeling simulation engineer?

Modeling Simulation Engineers are responsible for developing mathematical models, running simulations, analyzing results, and providing recommendations to improve system performance or design. Projects often begin with understanding client or stakeholder requirements, followed by designing models based on those needs and iteratively refining them as data is collected. Engineers work closely with design, hardware, and software teams to validate models and ensure alignment with real-world performance. Collaborating with colleagues and presenting findings to both technical and non-technical audiences are routine aspects of the job, making cross-functional communication vital for project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the modeling simulation engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, physics, and computer science, typically supported by a relevant engineering or science degree. Proficiency with simulation software such as MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS, or similar tools, and sometimes certifications in systems engineering or modeling methodologies, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart. These qualifications are crucial for accurately representing complex systems, translating requirements into effective models, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project goals.

Job description

About us

Axiomatic AI is building a new class of AI systems designed to reason with the rigor of the scientific method. By combining deep learning with formal logic and physics-based modeling, we create verifiable, interpretable AI systems that collaborate with and support human researchers in high-stakes scientific and engineering workflows.

Our mission, 3030, is to deliver a 30 improvement in the speed, accessibility, and cost of semiconductor and photonic hardware development by 2030.

We aim to revolutionize hardware design and simulation in these industries and are building a team of highly motivated professionals to bring these innovations from research into commercial products.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Forward-Deployed Engineer with technical credibility in engineering design and hands-on experience in building agentic AI workflows for enterprise engineering environments. In this role, you will work directly with engineers, researchers, and engineering leadership at customer organizations to translate complex photonic device and circuit challenges into structured, deployable systems built on top of the Axiomatic Intelligence platform.

You will serve as the technical bridge between customer requirements and product capabilities - architecting intelligent workflows, rapidly developing high-impact software demos, and shaping the transformation of photonics product design. Your work will span modeling, design, simulation automation, and design-space optimization, all while meeting stringent requirements around validation, IP protection, and deployment modality. You will serve as a highly professional and credible representative of Axiomatic AI, balancing technical rigor with a solution-driven and relationship-focused approach.

Your Mission

  • Customer Discovery & Technical Framing: Engage deeply with customer teams to understand device, circuit, and packaging design workflows. Translate ambiguous, multi-modal engineering requirements into clear technical architectures and delivery roadmaps. Act as a trusted technical partner during pilots, evaluations, and early production deployments.
  • Rapid Prototyping & Agentic Workflows: Build high-impact prototypes demonstrating AI-assisted photonic modeling, multi-domain co-design, circuit optimization, and simulation automation. Design and deploy agentic AI workflows that orchestrate LLMs, physics-based models, simulations, scientific tools, and customer data. Iterate quickly based on real-world feedback while ensuring technical rigor and product readiness.
  • Customer-Product Bridge: Collaborate closely with internal software and product teams to convert field learnings into scalable platform capabilities. Provide structured feedback to influence roadmap, architecture, and long-term product strategy.

Key Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 2 years in a customer-facing technical role (forward deployed engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, or pre/post-sales engineering).
  • MSc or PhD in a science or engineering field.
  • Solid programming skills in Python, able to read, modify, and extend production codebases to tailor the product to customer needs. Comfortable working across the current stack when a customer engagement requires it.
  • Proven experience working directly with external enterprise customers: leading technical conversations, understanding their workflows, presenting solutions to engineering leadership, and managing expectations on timelines and tradeoffs.
  • Ability to build high-impact demos and prototypes quickly, while making conscious decisions about technical debt, knowing that some demos will evolve into production features, and choosing technologies and patterns that allow for reuse when that happens.
  • Ability to estimate effort and timelines for custom feature work and communicate realistic expectations to both customers and internal teams.
  • Experience coordinating across multiple technical teams (engineering, product, AI, infrastructure) to deliver customer-driven solutions.
  • Strong judgment on technical tradeoffs, knowing when to build custom vs. use what exists, when to take on tech debt for speed vs. when to push back, and when to escalate.
  • Hands-on experience with modern AI tools (LLMs, APIs, agentic systems, orchestration frameworks).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; a highly effective listener; able to work directly with engineers, engineering managers, and enterprise stakeholders.
  • Possess a naturally friendly, helpful and collaborative attitude, acting as a true partner to customers.

Nice to Have

  • Hands-on experience building agentic AI solutions using modern frameworks (e.g., PydanticAI, LangGraph, LangChain, etc ).
  • Experience with EDA-style environments or hardware-software co-design.
  • Ability to design solutions that connect device-level physics, circuit-level constraints, and system-level automation.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and production deployment workflows.
  • Familiarity with enterprise deployment models (cloud, hybrid, on-prem) and HPC or cluster-based compute environments.
  • Experience working with research teams, applied scientists, or R&D organizations on production software.

What we offer

  • Competitive compensation
  • Stock Options Plan: Empowering you to share in our success and growth.
  • Cutting-Edge Tools: Access to state-of-the-art tools and collaborative opportunities with leading experts in artificial intelligence, physics, hardware and electronic design automation.
  • Professional Growth: Opportunities to attend industry conferences, present research findings, and engage with the global AI research community.
  • Impact-Driven Culture: Join a passionate team focused on solving some of the most challenging problems at the intersection of AI and hardware.

Work model & location expectations:

Team work model:
Onsite/ Hybrid in Toronto or Boston, Remote in Singapore

Primary location:
Boston/Toronto/Singapore

On-site expectations (if applicable):
Fully onsite or hybrid with 2-3 times per week in Boston or Toronto office depending on the agreement with the Manager
