Model Systems Engineering information

What is model systems engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

How does a model systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

This is a senior Control Systems Engineering role responsible for the design, development, and commissioning of SCADA, BMS, and EPMS systems across hyperscale data center infrastructure in the U.S. and Europe.

You will lead end-to-end controls system architecture for mission-critical facilities, covering chilled water systems, HVAC, power monitoring, and data hall controls. The role includes ownership of system design, PLC/SCADA programming, commissioning support, and integration of complex industrial control systems into large-scale AI infrastructure environments.

You will also define and standardize control system design practices across multiple deployments, ensuring consistency, reliability, and scalability across rapidly growing global portfolio.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • 10+ years of experience in industrial control systems engineering

  • Strong background in PLC, DCS, SCADA, and industrial networked control systems

  • Hands-on experience with platforms such as Rockwell, Siemens, Ignition, or equivalent

  • Proficiency in control programming (ladder logic, function block, etc.)

  • Experience designing control systems for mission-critical or industrial facilities

  • Strong ability to develop system architecture, SOOs, P&IDs, and HMI designs

  • Experience supporting FAT, commissioning, and field deployment activities

  • Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring engineering teams

  • Willingness to travel 50โ€“70% for site-based work

Preferred qualifications include:

  • PE license (preferred but not required)

  • Experience managing large-scale controls programs from design through commissioning

  • Familiarity with Revit or other 3D modeling tool

  • Knowledge of evolving industrial automation and control technologies

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and implementation of data center control systems including HVAC, chilled water, power monitoring, and data hall systems

  • Develop control system architectures, functional specifications, and detailed engineering design

  • Program and configure PLCs, SCADA systems, and HMIs based on project requirements

  • Define and maintain standard sequences of operations (SOOs), P&IDs, and control design templates

  • Support simulations, factory acceptance testing (FAT), construction, and commissioning activities

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers

  • Ensure alignment of control systems with overall electrical, mechanical, and operational design intent

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams across multiple global site

  • Establish and improve control system standards across infrastructure portfolio

Compensation & Benefits

  • The base salary for this W-2 position ranges from $96.15 โ€“ $120.19 per hour, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
