Model Systems Engineering information

What is model systems engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

How does a model systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

Join Micron's Storage and Memory Systems Pathfinding group and take the lead in advancing the future of memory and storage technologies! As the Manager of the Architecture and Hardware team in Micron's Storage and Memory Systems (SMS) group within TPG Pathfinding, you will manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers responsible for system-level architecture, hardware prototyping, and applied research for next-generation memory and storage technologies. This role combines people management, technical leadership, external collaboration, and program execution across advanced memory and storage systems!

Responsibilities
  • Lead system-level architecture assessment, prototyping, and exploration for advanced memory and storage technologies (CXL, DDR/LPDDR, HBM, NVMe, emerging/disaggregated memory), including FPGA-based controller emulation and AI infrastructure prototypes. Establish requirements, success criteria, and experimental methods for performance, cost, power, and scalability tradeoffs. Conduct architecture impact analysis in response to competitive threats.
  • Partner with Software and Applications Modeling teams to connect architectural concepts to real AI workloads -Leveraging AI and foster cross-team collaboration within SMS and across TPG product groups.
  • Own technical execution for multi-year internal and externally funded programs, including achievements, deliverables, and reviews. Lead all aspects of system procurement, integration, lab bring-up, validation, and operational readiness.
  • Engage with internal and external partners, vendors, research organizations, and official bodies governing industry standards. Support executive-level briefings, roadmap discussions, and team strategy sessions.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of senior engineers across hardware, systems architecture, RTL/FPGA, board design, and system validation. Strategically grow team capabilities in AI system architecture, memory and I/O protocols, performance/power/TCO modeling, advanced packaging and interconnect system impact. Own resource planning, staffing allocation, budgets, and purchase approvals. Ensure lab safety, compliance, and operational continuity.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (Master's or PhD preferred) and 10+ years of experience in systems architecture, hardware development, storage, memory, or AI infrastructure.
  • Proven experience leading and running senior technical teams and complex engineering programs, preferably in a pathfinding or advanced R&D organization.
  • Deep understanding of memory hierarchies, storage systems, and system-level performance analysis, with technologies such as HBM, DDR/LPDDR, SSDs and NAND.
  • Working Knowledge of AI compute and storage system architectures, including xPU (GPU, CPU, DPU, accelerator) memory-storage hierarchy interactions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including executive-level technical presentations. Ability to work effectively in an environment with significant ambiguity and constantly evolving priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with FPGA-based prototyping, hardware emulation, RTL/Verification flows, board-level development, electrical debug, and lab bring-up.
  • Experience with system-level performance modeling (bandwidth, latency, queueing, utilization, trace-based analysis), power/energy/TCO modeling, advanced packaging and interconnect technology evaluation.
  • Experience with government-funded research programs or national laboratories, and active participation in industry standards bodies (JEDEC, UCIe, SNIA, NVMe, PCI-SIG, etc.), with a proven track record to bridge research, engineering, and product strategy.
  • Experience integrating AI tools into engineering workflows to improve team efficiency.
Benefits
  • Micron benefits are designed to help you stay well, provide peace of mind and help you prepare for the future.
