Job description

Under general supervision, the Painting Tech I applies coats of paint, varnish, and stain to
maintain and protect interior and exterior surfaces, including trim, walls, and ceilings
throughout Liberty University. The role requires independent work and exercising good
judgment and discretion
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Reports to work on time and perform duties as assigned by the Painting Supervisor or Lead.
2. Work 1st or 2nd shift and participate in the "Available to Work" rotation as needed, including emergency or non-routine maintenance after hours.
3. Demonstrate familiarity with standard painting trade concepts, practices, and procedures.
4. Ensure proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
5. Smooth and prepare surfaces by sanding and removing old paint using paint removers, scrapers, wire brushes, or heat guns.
6. Tape, mud, and texture walls and ceilings.
7. Apply coatings to interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, and sprayers.
8. Assist with filling nail holes, cracks, and joints using caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers with appropriate tools.
9. Prime surfaces as needed.
10. Erect scaffolding or set up ladders for tasks above ground level safely.
11. Possess basic knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, procedures, and tools used in painting.
12. Perform job functions following instructions and established guidelines.
13. Assist with receiving and completing work orders and maintaining workload.
14. Report progress, issues, and defects to Supervisor or Lead Technician.
15. Work under immediate supervision.
16. Provide and maintain own hand tools required to perform trade-related tasks.
17. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times, including protective eyewear, ear protection, hard hats, gloves, steel or composite-toed shoes, respirators/masks, reflective safety vests, and harnesses/lanyards when operating aerial lifts.
18. Stay updated on emerging technologies, processes, products, and industry benchmarks relevant to the painting trade.
19. Perform other duties as assigned.
20. As Essential Personnel, you must be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns and any emergencies, including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Such as shoveling, salting, etc. Maintenance Technicians are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, and CFAW, summer camps, amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.

22. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's Christian model and Mission - Training Champions for Christ.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 1+ year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
• Ability to follow instructions and work under limited supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to work well with coworkers and the public with a positive attitude.
• Strong desire to grow, improve, and work effectively as part of a team.
• Clean, professional appearance; courteous, detail-oriented, self-motivated, diligent, and trustworthy.
• Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain aerial lift certifications, operate aerial lifts, and work safely at heights.
• Certifications obtained at Liberty University expense must be reimbursed to the University if voluntarily resigned within 12 months

  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry materials up to 50+ pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment The essential functions of this position are performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, including climate-controlled offices and active construction sites. The position requires physical activity such as bending, twisting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, and stooping. Work may be conducted in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and humidity. Duties may also involve working at heights or in physically demanding conditions on active job sites.
Driving Requirements If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one's personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel. Proof of a valid driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee's position.

Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.
The position may also be eligible for comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
