Model Based Design Engineer information

What is a model based design engineer?

Model Based Design Engineers are professionals who use mathematical and visual modeling techniques to design, simulate, and validate complex engineering systems. They typically work with tools like MATLAB/Simulink to create virtual prototypes, test control algorithms, and reduce the need for physical prototypes. This approach helps speed up the development process, improve accuracy, and lower costs, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model based design engineer?

To thrive as a Model Based Design Engineer, you need a strong background in control theory, embedded systems, and proficiency in modeling and simulation, typically supported by an engineering degree. Expertise with tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and experience with software version control systems are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like MATLAB certification. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in translating real-world requirements into accurate models and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient development and validation of complex systems, minimizing errors and reducing development time.

What are some common challenges model based design engineers face when integrating models into existing embedded systems?

Model Based Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating simulation models into legacy embedded systems, as these systems may have hardware or software constraints not accounted for in the initial model. Ensuring model fidelity while optimizing for real-time performance and memory usage requires careful design and iterative testing. Collaboration with firmware and hardware teams is crucial to address compatibility issues and streamline deployment. Adopting standardized modeling practices and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate integration risks and facilitate smoother handoffs between teams.

What is the difference between Model Based Design Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

AspectModel Based Design EngineerSimulation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in MATLAB/SimulinkBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, experience with simulation tools
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, software development, automotive/ aerospace industriesResearch labs, testing environments, aerospace/automotive sectors
Industry UsageDevelops models for control systems, embedded softwareCreates simulations to test systems, validate designs

The main difference is that Model Based Design Engineers focus on creating and implementing models for system development, often using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, while Simulation Engineers primarily develop and run simulations to validate and test these models or systems. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

Job description

About Welker

At Welker, our mission is to Build Something Greater. We are a family-owned manufacturing company based in Sugar Land, Texas, with over 70 years of experience designing innovative solutions for the oil & gas industry.

Our capabilitiesโ€”including ERP systems, 3D CAD design, and on-site manual and CNC machiningโ€”allow us to provide complete, high-quality products and turnkey solutions to customers worldwide.

If you're looking to make an impact at a stable, forward-thinking company where your work is tangible and valued, Welker may be the right fit.

About the Role

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives on owning projects from concept through production. In this role, you will design and customize pressure-containing equipment and mechanical systems for a range of industrial applications.

This is a hands-on engineering position where your designs are not just theoreticalโ€”youโ€™ll see them built, tested, and used in real-world environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and modify pressure-containing equipment and mechanical assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Interpret customer specifications, datasheets, and industry requirements to develop compliant design solutions
  • Perform engineering calculations (pressure design, stress analysis, tolerances, material selection)
  • Ensure designs meet applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, PED, IECEx, CRN)
  • Create and release detailed drawings, models, routers, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Support product testing, certification, and technical documentation
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, sales, and quality teams
  • Apply design for manufacturability (DFM) principles to improve production efficiency
  • Troubleshoot design issues and contribute to continuous product improvement
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited)
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software
  • Familiar with ASME codes and pressure-containing equipment design
  • Understanding of machining, fabrication, and assembly processes
  • Strong attention to detail with a proactive, ownership mindset
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of mechanical design experience in oil & gas, energy, or industrial manufacturing
  • Experience with:
    • Valves, regulators, or pressure control equipment
    • Instrumentation or electrical components
    • Engineering calculations
    • Validating designs
    • Familiarity with certification standards (PED, CRN, IECEx)
Why Join Welker?
  • Work on real, built products from concept to production
  • Be part of a collaborative, cross-functional engineering team
  • Gain exposure to both legacy product improvements and new product development
  • Join a stable, family-owned company with long-term growth
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary (based on experience, education, and potential)
  • Health, dental, vision, life, and long term disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Tuition reimbursement
Additional Requirements
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must successfully complete a drug screen, physical, and background check

If you're ready to design impactful products and see your work come to life, weโ€™d love to hear from you.
