Model Based Design Engineer information

What is a model based design engineer?

Model Based Design Engineers are professionals who use mathematical and visual modeling techniques to design, simulate, and validate complex engineering systems. They typically work with tools like MATLAB/Simulink to create virtual prototypes, test control algorithms, and reduce the need for physical prototypes. This approach helps speed up the development process, improve accuracy, and lower costs, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model based design engineer?

To thrive as a Model Based Design Engineer, you need a strong background in control theory, embedded systems, and proficiency in modeling and simulation, typically supported by an engineering degree. Expertise with tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and experience with software version control systems are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like MATLAB certification. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in translating real-world requirements into accurate models and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient development and validation of complex systems, minimizing errors and reducing development time.

What are some common challenges model based design engineers face when integrating models into existing embedded systems?

Model Based Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating simulation models into legacy embedded systems, as these systems may have hardware or software constraints not accounted for in the initial model. Ensuring model fidelity while optimizing for real-time performance and memory usage requires careful design and iterative testing. Collaboration with firmware and hardware teams is crucial to address compatibility issues and streamline deployment. Adopting standardized modeling practices and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate integration risks and facilitate smoother handoffs between teams.

What is the difference between Model Based Design Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

AspectModel Based Design EngineerSimulation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in MATLAB/SimulinkBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, experience with simulation tools
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, software development, automotive/ aerospace industriesResearch labs, testing environments, aerospace/automotive sectors
Industry UsageDevelops models for control systems, embedded softwareCreates simulations to test systems, validate designs

The main difference is that Model Based Design Engineers focus on creating and implementing models for system development, often using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, while Simulation Engineers primarily develop and run simulations to validate and test these models or systems. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

Job description

Senior Product Manager-3D Modelling Solutions
Job Location (Short): Houston, United States
Workplace Type: Remote
Req Id: 3226
Responsibilities
Octave is looking for a Senior Product Manager to own the strategy and roadmap for our 3D Modelling solutions - the model-based design environment where plant, piping, and structural designers lay out facilities in 3D, detect and resolve clashes, and generate the deliverables that drive construction and operations. You'll sit at the intersection of deeply technical users, engineering, and the business, and you'll be accountable for a product that designers trust and that grows Octave's position in the market.
As Senior Product Manager for 3D Modelling Solutions, you'll own the full product lifecycle for a technically sophisticated, model-centric product. You'll define what we build and why, partner with engineering and design to ship it, and measure whether it moved the needle for customers and the business. This is a high-ownership role: you'll set direction, make prioritization calls, and act as the voice of the customer inside Octave.
Our users are plant, piping, and structural designers, layout and mechanical engineers, and project teams at owner-operators and EPC firms across industries such as oil & gas, chemicals, power, pharmaceuticals, and water. Understanding how they build and use 3D models - from greenfield design to brownfield retrofit - is central to the job.
What you will do:
  • Own the vision, strategy, and multi-quarter roadmap for the 3D Modelling product, and align stakeholders around it.
  • Talk to users constantly - plant, piping, and structural designers, plus the EPCs and owner-operators who buy - to build first-hand understanding of their modelling workflows, deliverables, and pain points.
  • Deepen the model-based design experience: intelligent 3D components, catalogs and specs, layout and routing, and clash detection and resolution.
  • Prioritize the generation of downstream deliverables engineers depend on - isometrics, general arrangement drawings, material take-offs, and reports - with accuracy and automation.
  • Connect 3D modelling to the wider plant lifecycle: consistency with P&ID and schematic data upstream, and reliable handover to construction, as-built models, and digital twins downstream.
  • Evaluate and prioritize reality-capture workflows (point clouds, laser scanning, and photogrammetry) for brownfield and retrofit projects.
  • Prioritize ruthlessly across competing opportunities, balancing customer value, business impact, technical effort, and risk - including performance and scale for very large models.
  • Partner day-to-day with engineering and design to ship high-quality releases, making tradeoff decisions as scope and constraints evolve.
  • Champion interoperability and open data exchange so models move cleanly across tools and disciplines (e.g., ISO 15926 and common industry formats).
  • Define and track the metrics that matter (adoption, retention, engagement, revenue impact) and use them to guide decisions.
  • Work with marketing, sales, and customer success on positioning, launches, enablement, and feedback loops.
  • Monitor the competitive and technology landscape in 3D plant design and engineering software, and turn it into a differentiated strategy.
  • Communicate direction, progress, and reasoning clearly to leadership and cross-functional partners.

Education / Qualifications
  • 5+ years in product management, including experience owning a product or major area end-to-end.
  • A track record of shipping software products that solved real user problems and drove measurable outcomes.
  • Strong technical fluency - comfortable engaging engineers on architecture, data models, and tradeoffs, and able to understand technical products deeply.
  • Ability to quickly build domain understanding of specialized design workflows and translate them into product decisions.
  • Excellent judgment on prioritization and scope, with the ability to say no gracefully and defend your reasoning with data and customer insight.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to make complex topics clear for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence across engineering, design, and go-to-market teams without direct authority.

Highly Preferred
  • Experience with 3D CAD, plant design, BIM, or CAE software - ideally 3D plant/piping/structural modelling or adjacent tooling.
  • Familiarity with process and plant industries (oil & gas, chemicals, power, pharmaceuticals, water/wastewater) and the EPC / owner-operator landscape.
  • Understanding of model-based design, clash detection, and the generation of isometrics, GAs, and material take-offs.
  • Exposure to reality capture (point clouds, laser scanning), digital twins, or as-built/handover workflows.
  • Awareness of interoperability standards and formats for engineering data (e.g., ISO 15926).
  • Background in mechanical, piping, structural, process, or a related engineering field.
  • Experience with usage analytics, experimentation, and quantitative decision-making.
