What is a model based design engineer?

Model Based Design Engineers are professionals who use mathematical and visual modeling techniques to design, simulate, and validate complex engineering systems. They typically work with tools like MATLAB/Simulink to create virtual prototypes, test control algorithms, and reduce the need for physical prototypes. This approach helps speed up the development process, improve accuracy, and lower costs, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model based design engineer?

To thrive as a Model Based Design Engineer, you need a strong background in control theory, embedded systems, and proficiency in modeling and simulation, typically supported by an engineering degree. Expertise with tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and experience with software version control systems are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like MATLAB certification. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in translating real-world requirements into accurate models and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient development and validation of complex systems, minimizing errors and reducing development time.

What are some common challenges model based design engineers face when integrating models into existing embedded systems?

Model Based Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating simulation models into legacy embedded systems, as these systems may have hardware or software constraints not accounted for in the initial model. Ensuring model fidelity while optimizing for real-time performance and memory usage requires careful design and iterative testing. Collaboration with firmware and hardware teams is crucial to address compatibility issues and streamline deployment. Adopting standardized modeling practices and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate integration risks and facilitate smoother handoffs between teams.

What is the difference between Model Based Design Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

AspectModel Based Design EngineerSimulation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in MATLAB/SimulinkBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, experience with simulation tools
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, software development, automotive/ aerospace industriesResearch labs, testing environments, aerospace/automotive sectors
Industry UsageDevelops models for control systems, embedded softwareCreates simulations to test systems, validate designs

The main difference is that Model Based Design Engineers focus on creating and implementing models for system development, often using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, while Simulation Engineers primarily develop and run simulations to validate and test these models or systems. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

Bounty Description

Industry: Aerospace / Aviation / Defense

Job Category: Engineering - Electrical

You will report to the Senior Manager of Electronic Products and will have a hybrid work schedule in East Aurora, NY, or Torrance, CA.

As a Staff Electrical Design Engineer within our Aircraft Group, you’ll play a key technical leadership role in developing next‑generation flight control and motor control electronics for military aviation platforms.

In this senior‑level position, you’ll apply deep technical expertise and sound engineering judgment to architect, design, and qualify complex electrohydraulic, electromechanical, and electropneumatic systems. You’ll lead technical efforts across disciplines, shape system architectures, and mentor engineers while collaborating directly with customers, programs, and suppliers to deliver mission‑critical solutions.

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Serve as electronics box architect for flight control computers and motor control electronics.
  • Act as technical integration lead and primary technical point of contact for customers, programs, and vendors.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, software, digital, analog, power, firmware).
  • Independently define and implement new technical approaches to complex engineering problems.
  • Develop and mature system architectures and requirements in collaboration with Systems Engineering and other disciplines.
  • Generate technical concepts and ensure requirements compliance for proposals supporting new aircraft platforms.
  • Design flight control electronics including high‑power motor inverters, gate drives, power electronics, feedback/control circuits, microprocessors, FPGAs, firmware, and algorithms.
  • Apply Model-Based Design tools and methods (MATLAB, Simulink, PSpice, first-order hand calculations).
  • Ensure designs meet cost, reliability, schedule, and manufacturability objectives.
  • Design electronics to meet EMI/EMC and environmental requirements.
  • Lead Validation & Verification (V&V) efforts and oversee qualification testing.
  • Define requirements for electronics test equipment and author development and qualification test procedures.
  • Mentor and coach engineers across the electronics organization.
  • Promote strong engineering processes, technical rigor, and continuous improvement.
Here’s what you'll typically bring with you:
  • At least a BS in Electrical Engineering, MS preferred
  • 10+ years of applicable circuit card design experience
  • 5+ years of technical team leadership experience
  • Experience in the design, analysis and development of closed loop motor drives.
  • Leadership with strong organizational skills and a desire for continuous improvement.
  • Preferably experience with requirement flow down, actuator controllers, sensor interfaces, commercial and military standards (RTCA/DO-160, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-810, and RTCA/DO-254 standards), Qualification, and Certification
How we care for you:
  • Financial Rewards: great compensation package, annual profit sharing, matching 401k and the ability to participate in Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts
