What are Model Based Design Engineers?

Model Based Design Engineers are professionals who use mathematical and visual modeling techniques to design, simulate, and validate complex engineering systems. They typically work with tools like MATLAB/Simulink to create virtual prototypes, test control algorithms, and reduce the need for physical prototypes. This approach helps speed up the development process, improve accuracy, and lower costs, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What are some common challenges Model Based Design Engineers face when integrating models into existing embedded systems?

Model Based Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating simulation models into legacy embedded systems, as these systems may have hardware or software constraints not accounted for in the initial model. Ensuring model fidelity while optimizing for real-time performance and memory usage requires careful design and iterative testing. Collaboration with firmware and hardware teams is crucial to address compatibility issues and streamline deployment. Adopting standardized modeling practices and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate integration risks and facilitate smoother handoffs between teams.

What is the difference between Model Based Design Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

AspectModel Based Design EngineerSimulation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in MATLAB/SimulinkBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, experience with simulation tools
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, software development, automotive/ aerospace industriesResearch labs, testing environments, aerospace/automotive sectors
Industry UsageDevelops models for control systems, embedded softwareCreates simulations to test systems, validate designs

The main difference is that Model Based Design Engineers focus on creating and implementing models for system development, often using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, while Simulation Engineers primarily develop and run simulations to validate and test these models or systems. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Based Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Based Design Engineer, you need a strong background in control theory, embedded systems, and proficiency in modeling and simulation, typically supported by an engineering degree. Expertise with tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and experience with software version control systems are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like MATLAB certification. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in translating real-world requirements into accurate models and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient development and validation of complex systems, minimizing errors and reducing development time.

About LiquidPiston

LiquidPiston (LPI) is revolutionizing the internal combustion engine. Our patented High Efficiency Hybrid Cycle (HEHC) and rotary X-engine platform enable compact, ultra-efficient, and power-dense engines for hybrid, aerospace, and power generation applications. We are a mission-driven team of innovators determined to push the boundaries of energy and propulsion.
Position Overview
We are seeking talented and motivated Engine Design Engineers to join our growing team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of developing groundbreaking engine systems and componentsโ€”from initial concept through prototyping, validation, and production. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, analyze, and optimize high-performance subsystems with a focus on efficiency, weight, durability, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define system and component-level requirements aligned with overall engine architecture and performance goals.

  • Design, package, and integrate components into the complete engine assembly, ensuring alignment, mechanical integrity, and functional performance.

  • Conduct feasibility studies and tradeoff analyses; develop conceptual and detailed designs for engine subsystems.

  • Create 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks; release designs for prototyping and production.

  • Perform or lead design validation activities, including FEA, thermal, and vibration analyses.

  • Drive virtual simulation efforts and support the use of analysis tools for thermodynamic and mechanical performance modeling.

  • Maintain accurate documentation including BOMs, engineering change orders, technical reports, and design specifications.

  • Support design-for-manufacturing (DFM), quality assurance, and serviceability initiatives in collaboration with other functions.

  • Identify and resolve design issues quickly and effectively, driving continuous improvement and root-cause solutions.

  • Plan and execute design validation processes including D/PFMEA, DVPR, and design reviews.

  • Support sourcing efforts and supplier interface activities related to component manufacturing and quality control.

  • Participate in and lead technical presentations to internal stakeholders and external partners.

You Are:
  • A strong mechanical engineer with direct experience in engine or complex mechanical system design.

  • Capable of managing the full lifecycle of componentsโ€”from concept through post-production support.

  • A hands-on problem solver with strong analytical and creative thinking skills.

  • Passionate about innovation, with a practical, execution-focused mindset.

  • Highly collaborative, but also able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Technically deep, with knowledge of rotary or combustion engines, thermofluid systems, and mechanical integration challenges.

  • Proficient in CAD and simulation toolsโ€”SolidWorks, FEA, and engine modeling software (e.g., GT-Power or AVL) a plus.

  • An excellent communicator, with strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.

Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • 3+ years of experience in engine design, preferably in automotive, aerospace, marine, or power generation industries.

  • Working knowledge of thermodynamics, combustion, and fluid mechanics.

  • Experience with engine performance modeling tools (GT-Power, AVL, ANSYS, etc.).

  • Strong understanding of DFM principles and production processes.

  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and data analysis.

  • Familiarity with product development tools including MS Project, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Benefits
  • Flexible PTOย to encourage work-life balance and personal well-being
  • Comprehensive healthcareย coverage: medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Equity participation: RSUs for all permanent employees
  • 401(k) with match: 100% up to 3%, plus 50% match for 3โ€“5% range
  • Growth opportunities: Mentorship, training, and leadership development
