Job description

About the Opportunity

This is a Postdoctoral Associate role - per the formatting guide, postdoctoral/research positions use Structure B: Summary Qualifications Responsibilities (the Ph.D. is a hard credential gate, so qualifications surface first). Here's the reformatted JD:

Postdoctoral Associate

Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct integrated experimental and theoretical research on the mechano-electrochemical behavior of battery electrodes and active particles. The primary function of the position is to develop and deploy advanced experimental platforms for coupled electrochemical-mechanical measurements, including optical quantification of deformation at the electrode and single-particle scales, and to perform systematic electrochemical testing across coin, pouch, and cylindrical cells.

The postdoc will analyze chemo-mechanical phenomena in porous electrodes and individual particles, and contribute to the development of physics-based models, including porous electrode theory and single-particle frameworks. The role combines hands-on battery fabrication and characterization with rigorous data analysis and modeling, and benefits from complementary expertise in computational simulations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field, with 0-3 years of relevant research experience in battery systems or electrochemical energy storage.

  • Knowledge of electrochemistry, battery materials, and electrochemical testing methods.

  • Knowledge of chemo-mechanics and coupled electrochemical-mechanical phenomena in electrodes and active particles.

  • Ability to fabricate and assemble battery cells (e.g., coin, pouch, cylindrical) and conduct cycling and diagnostic tests.

  • Ability to design and execute experiments, including optical or in situ characterization techniques for deformation measurements.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret experimental data and develop physics-based models (e.g., porous electrode theory and single-particle models).

  • Familiarity with computational tools for data analysis and/or simulation.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Lead the development of experimental platforms for mechano-electrochemical measurements, including optical characterization of deformation in electrodes and single particles.

  • Fabricate battery cells (coin, pouch, cylindrical) and perform electrochemical testing and cycling experiments to generate high-quality datasets.

  • Analyze chemo-mechanical behavior in porous electrodes and active particles using experimental data and theoretical frameworks.

  • Develop and implement physics-based models, including porous electrode theory and single-particle models, with potential integration of computational simulations.

  • Document and disseminate research findings through publications, reports, and presentations, and contribute to collaborative research efforts.
