What is an MOCVD job?

An MOCVD job typically involves working with Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) systems used to manufacture semiconductor materials and thin films. Professionals in this field operate, maintain, and optimize MOCVD equipment to grow high-quality materials for applications such as LEDs, lasers, and microelectronics. Responsibilities may include process development, troubleshooting, and ensuring safety protocols. Strong knowledge of chemistry, physics, and engineering principles is usually required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mocvd position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MOCVD (Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) Engineer or Technician, you typically need a background in materials science, chemistry, or engineering, along with hands-on experience in semiconductor fabrication processes. Proficiency in using and maintaining MOCVD reactors, understanding process control software, and familiarity with safety protocols are vital; certifications in cleanroom operations or relevant semiconductor tools are advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills set outstanding candidates apart. These qualities are crucial for ensuring precise material deposition, equipment reliability, and successful collaboration in a fast-evolving technology environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by MOCVD Engineers or Technicians, and how are they addressed?

A common challenge in MOCVD roles is maintaining the precise control required for high-quality thin film deposition, as even minor variations in parameters can affect product quality. Rapid troubleshooting and preventative maintenance of complex reactor systems are often necessary, requiring both technical know-how and quick decision-making. Collaboration with process engineers, R&D teams, and quality control personnel is essential to resolve issues and implement improvements efficiently. Companies typically provide thorough training, strict cleanroom protocols, and regular safety updates to help team members succeed and uphold manufacturing standards.

The MOCVD Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine and corrective maintenance on Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) reactors used in semiconductor epitaxy. This role ensures that equipment operates safely, reliably, and within factory specifications to support high-volume production and engineering development. The technician works hands-on with complex mechanical, electrical, gas delivery, and vacuum systems in a cleanroom environment.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on MOCVD reactors
  • Support chamber cleans, hardware replacements, rebuilds, calibrations, and system resets.
  • Identify and troubleshoot equipment issues involving vacuum pumps, MFCs, valves, robotics, sensors, heating systems, and gas panels.
  • Execute scheduled PMs with proper documentation and attention to detail.

Operational Support
  • Respond to production tool-down events and work with Equipment Engineers to restore operation quickly.
  • Perform system checks, startup/shutdown procedures, and readiness verifications.
  • Monitor tool performance, log issues, and escalate abnormal trends.

Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, PM records, and equipment history.
  • Follow cleanroom protocols, safety procedures, and standard work instructions.
  • Use CMMS systems to track work orders, parts usage, and maintenance status.

Safety & Hazardous Systems
  • Safely work around hazardous gases with appropriate PPE.
  • Verify gas delivery and exhaust systems operate correctly; report any abnormalities.
  • Follow lock-out/tag-out, high-temperature handling, and chemical safety guidelines.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work with Equipment Engineers to support upgrades, retrofits, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Coordinate with Facilities on gas, vacuum, electrical, and cooling utilities.
  • Support process and manufacturing teams to ensure equipment meets production schedules.

Qualifications
Required
  • Associate degree in Electronics, Mechanical Technology, Mechatronics, or related field or equivalent military/technical experience.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining complex equipment (semiconductor tools, industrial machinery, vacuum systems, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and/or vacuum systems.
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and work instructions.
  • Comfort working in a cleanroom with full gowning.

Preferred
  • Experience with semiconductor manufacturing equipment-MOCVD, PVD, CVD, etch, or similar.
  • Experience with hazardous gas handling systems.
  • Familiarity with data collection tools, SPC charts, or equipment monitoring software.
  • CMMS experience (Maximo, SAP PM, etc.).
