What is mobile testing?

Mobile testing is the process of testing applications developed for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It involves verifying the functionality, usability, performance, and security of mobile apps across different devices, operating systems, and network conditions. The goal is to ensure that the app works as intended for all users, regardless of the device or platform they use. Mobile testing can include both manual and automated testing approaches to identify and fix issues before the app is released.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in mobile testing, and how can they be addressed?

Mobile testing professionals often encounter challenges such as device fragmentation, varying operating system versions, and rapidly changing app requirements. Addressing these issues involves maintaining a diverse device lab or using cloud-based testing platforms to ensure coverage across different devices and OS versions. Additionally, close collaboration with developers and product teams helps testers stay up-to-date on new features and bug fixes, allowing for more efficient and thorough testing cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile testing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Testing professional, you need strong knowledge of software testing methodologies, mobile platforms (iOS/Android), and experience with test case design and execution. Familiarity with automated testing tools like Appium, Selenium, or Espresso, as well as understanding of CI/CD systems, is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable mobile applications that meet user expectations and business requirements.

What is the difference between Mobile Testing vs Software Testing?

Mobile Testing and Software Testing share overlapping skills, such as understanding testing methodologies and tools. However, Mobile Testing specializes in testing mobile apps on various devices and platforms, requiring knowledge of mobile-specific tools and environments. Software Testing covers a broader range of applications, including desktop and web, with a focus on different testing tools and environments. Both roles are essential in ensuring application quality, but Mobile Testing is more specialized for mobile app performance and compatibility.

How do you become a mobile testing professional?

To become a mobile testing professional, you typically need a background in software testing or quality assurance, with knowledge of mobile platforms like iOS and Android. Skills in testing tools, scripting, and understanding app development processes are important, and certifications such as ISTQB can enhance your qualifications.

How to become a mobile tester?

To become a mobile tester, gain knowledge of mobile platforms and testing tools such as Appium or Selenium, and develop skills in manual and automated testing. A background in software testing, programming, or quality assurance is often helpful, and certifications like ISTQB can enhance credibility. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level roles can also improve job prospects.

Is mobile testing in demand?

Mobile testing is in high demand due to the widespread use of smartphones and mobile applications. Companies seek skilled testers to ensure app quality across various devices and operating systems, making mobile testing a valuable specialization in the software testing industry.

As an Mobile Engineer II within NextGear Capital, you will help build and evolve the mobile experiences that support customers, team members, and critical business operations across one of the automotive industry's leading inventory finance organizations. Working as part of a collaborative product and engineering team, you will deliver modern mobile solutions that improve user experiences, increase operational efficiency, and support the continued digital transformation of the business.

At NextGear Capital, AI-assisted software development is becoming a foundational aspect of how engineering teams work. In this role, you'll leverage modern AI tools and development practices throughout the software development lifecycle to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and enhance collaboration. Success requires strong mobile engineering fundamentals, thoughtful application of AI-augmented workflows, and a commitment to maintaining high standards for code quality, security, performance, and user experience.
You'll have opportunities to contribute across the mobile development lifecycle, participate in technical design discussions, collaborate on product initiatives, and help shape modern engineering practices within an organization actively investing in innovation, automation, and AI-driven transformation.

  • Contribute to prompt engineering experimentation and share tool usage insights with the team
  • Engage in design and development discussions, helping the team conceptualize desired outcomes from a software engineering perspective
  • Assist with feature/element estimation in terms of technical input, resources, time, and anticipated outcomes
  • Develop and implement unit and system tests for integral code paths, ensuring adherence to secure coding practices at all times
  • Provide technical support, including troubleshooting and enhancement, for existing and new features within application and system structures
  • Use observability tools (logs, metrics, traces, dashboards) to monitor system health, diagnose issues, and validate that changes behave as expected in production
  • Document processes to capture best practices, applicable methodologies, and repeatability going forward
  • Update team members, manager, product owners, and other key stakeholders on status, challenges, and concerns
  • Participate in code reviews, both giving and receiving feedback
  • Take ownership of assigned work and drive it to completion with minimal oversight, while staying closely engaged with teammates, raising blockers early, and pitching in on shared team goals beyond your own assigned tasks

  • Mobile Ecosystem Awareness: Working knowledge of the systems your native mobile applications integrate with, including REST APIs, backend services (e.g., Java/Spring Boot), authentication patterns, and relational data models. Understands how mobile applications interact with distributed systems and can effectively troubleshoot issues across integration points, while maintaining depth in native mobile development as their primary area of expertise.
  • Native Mobile Development: Demonstrated experience building native mobile applications using Android (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose) and/or iOS (Swift, SwiftUI) technologies. Familiarity with modern mobile architecture patterns, platform development tools, testing frameworks, and performance optimization techniques.
  • Version Control & Collaboration: Comfortable with Git workflows, branching strategies, and collaborative development practices
  • Observability: Working knowledge of logging, metrics, and monitoring tools (e.g., New Relic, dashboards, alerts) to understand system behavior and health
  • Communication: Able to clearly explain technical tradeoffs and status to teammates and non-technical stakeholders
  • This role requires working in the office three days per week in Carmel, Indiana

OUTCOMES
  • Working Software, Every Sprint: Produce working software each sprint that meets the definition of done, delivers expected value, and stays within constraints defined by engineering leadership
  • AI Fluency: Maintain effective AI-augmented workflows that measurably improve speed and quality. Actively share what works with the team
  • Quality Solutions: Deliver maintainable, testable, and performant software that leverages existing patterns and meets client needs, with solution complexity understood well enough to produce consistent, meaningful estimates
  • Craft Growth: Demonstrate measurable growth toward independent ownership of features and system elements
  • Plan Transparency: Ensure changes in direction that affect time, effort, cost, or scope are surfaced to the team and above quickly
  • Initiative: Identify opportunities for automation, improvement, or learning and act on them with minimal guidance
