Primary Function

The student technologist is required to perform invasive and non-invasive procedures on a variety of patients per the needs of the modality/department. The Student Technologist is required to utilize sterile techniques, if necessary, operate complex imaging equipment and assist physicians as necessary. Continuing education, learned skills and experience will be utilized. This position will function with supervision to produce superior quality imaging studies. The Student Technologist must routinely work as directed by department managers/supervisors to meet the specific needs of the department. Performs duties relating to the primary imaging modality in which they are working. The technologist must maintain flexibility and be open to work over and work holidays, and weekends as scheduled. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality, compassionate patient care while performing radiographic and CT procedures as ordered by physicians, with consideration for special patient needs (e.g., trauma, elderly, pregnancy).
• Perform accurate diagnostic imaging by selecting appropriate techniques (voltage, current, exposure time) and positioning patients for optimal image quality, while minimizing radiation exposure (ALARA standards).
• Follow established CT protocols and adjust techniques for pediatric and adult patients as needed.
• Ensure patient safety by obtaining necessary consent forms, reviewing medical history, identifying potential allergies, and following sterile and infection control procedures.
• Assist patients with transport and positioning for procedures; practice proper body mechanics and patient handling techniques.
• Conduct mobile imaging procedures in ER, and in-patient rooms using portable radiographic equipment.
• Wear radiation monitoring badges consistently during exposure-related duties.
• Operate and troubleshoot imaging equipment (e.g., scanners, injectors, monitors); report malfunctions and assist with evaluating new technologies.
• Assist with advanced procedures including angiograms, GI series, IVPs, barium studies, and fluoroscopy; prepare required sterile supplies and contrast materials.
• Perform and support QA activities in compliance with ACR standards across assigned imaging modalities.
• Maintain workflow efficiency by prioritizing cases, minimizing downtime, and ensuring timely exam completion.
• Apply knowledge of anatomy, pathology, pharmacology (contrast agents), and medical terminology to image acquisition and interpretation.
• Distinguish between imaging artifacts and pathology; recognize equipment limitations.
• Serve as a mentor and resource for new technologists and students, assisting with training and supervision.
• Provide input on departmental improvements, protocols, and new technology implementation.
• Remain flexible with scheduling, including call coverage, weekends, and holidays.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Minimum Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in an Accredited Radiography Program. 
• Must submit a letter of recommendation from the Radiography Instructor and/or Radiography Clinical Instructor stating you are in good standings within the program educationally and clinically. 
• Must possess and maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for CPR.
• Must possess a Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
• Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays while another technologist is on campus.   
• Must pass the ARRT registry and become a Registered Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist in Radiography within 3 months of graduation. 
• Must possess a personality to work with and welcome diverse cultures and backgrounds.
• Must be able to interact compassionately and effectively with the critically sick (physically or mentally) or traumatically injured.
• Must possess effective communication skills.
• Must be able to perform well as a team and independently with indirect supervision.

Job Knowledge

• Understanding of radiation protection principles, including dose limits and biological effects, to ensure safety for patients and staff.
• Solid knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to interpret imaging requests, identify organs, and select appropriate imaging views.
• Familiarity with the function and operation of X-ray equipment; beginning knowledge of CT imaging and positioning.
• Proficiency in radiographic exposure techniques to produce high-quality images with minimal radiation and repeat exams.
• Skill in positioning patients for complex radiologic exams to ensure diagnostic image quality.
• Basic knowledge of CT protocols to obtain accurate images with minimal radiation exposure.
• Knowledge of first aid and emergency response procedures, including CPR.
• Effective communication with radiologists, referring providers, and healthcare staff to coordinate care in clinics and the emergency department.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse patients and staff, maintaining professionalism and a positive attitude.
• Strong interpersonal skills to support teamwork, patient scheduling, and exam coordination.

Complexity of Duties

• Operate and maintain radiology and start learning the basics of CT equipment; perform routine and complex imaging exams, with supervision.
• Position patients and adjust equipment settings based on body type, condition, or special needs.
• The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Perform basic troubleshooting and quality assurance (QA) on imaging equipment.
• Collect and relay relevant patient information to medical staff.
• Begin training in administering oral and IV contrast for imaging procedures.
• Clearly explain procedures to patients and families, ensuring comfort and understanding.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers, physicians and care teams.
• Prepare and safely position patients for exams, minimizing radiation exposure.
• Assist technologists in evaluating images for diagnostic quality.
• Safely transfer and position immobile patients.
• Collaborate within and across departments to ensure high-quality patient care.

Contact with Others

Personal contacts are with patients, patient’s family, coworkers, Radiologists, other students, vendors and other professional workers. Personal contacts are of the purpose of performing imaging studies on patients.  Contacts with coworkers are to exchange information to resolve problems with equipment, procedures and rescheduling patients and to coordinate work with other technologists when working on procedures, which require a team effort.   Contacts with patients are to explain the procedure to be performed, patients who are unfamiliar with imaging procedures and to direct patient’s on how to move to achieve correct positioning.   Some patients are seriously ill, injured or nervous.  This may require the incumbent to provide reassurance and comfort.  Contacts with professionals outside the department are to demonstrate and explain practical problems and procedures in taking imaging procedures.  Contacts with the Radiologist, in addition to receiving instructions, are to coordinate work efforts to resolve problems.  Interpersonal skills are required along with tact, decorum, and professional etiquette. Consistently demonstrates customer service skills to patients and internal/external customers by displaying Right Way behaviors and skills.

Confidential Data

The Privacy Act of 1974 mandates that the incumbent shall maintain complete confidentiality of all administrative medical and personnel records, and all other pertinent information that comes to his/her attention or knowledge.  All types of information must be kept confidential. Must adhere to HIPPA and to the non-disclosure/confidentiality agreement of the CIHA in performance of duties.  Must maintain HIPPA compliance at all times.  The Privacy Act carries both civil and criminal penalties for unlawful disclosure of records.  Violations of such confidentiality shall be cause for adverse action. 

Mental/Visual/Physical Environment

Close attention to detail and mental concentration for extended periods are required with systems problems and applications. This is a multi-tasking position, which is subject to frequent interruptions requiring varied responses. Must deal with multiple situations concurrently.  Must frequently use creative thinking to complete tasks or solve problems.  Must be able to stand for long periods with frequent squatting, twisting, bending, kneeling and reaching to prepare equipment, materials or objects in order to provide patient care or maintain patient environment.  Must be able carry moderately heavy items such as detectors and supplies.   Considerable physical effort is involved in positioning patients who are unable to assist cooperate, heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help from other employees. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. 

Work Environment

The work environment is in a restricted access area. Will be exposed to moveable equipment, chemical fumes, patients with contagious diseases, electrical equipment, ionizing radiation, and contamination or infection through accidental needle puncture or exposure to blood and/or body fluids. Occasional exposures to odor, blood, chemical irritation, and a variety of constant interruption.  Area is supplied with personal protective equipment.  Area has appropriate light and is temperature controlled. Telephone and computer access are adequate for communications.  There may be occasions when overtime is required.  Will be necessary to work when administrative leave is granted if patient care would be compromised

Supervision Received

Incumbent will work with indirect supervision of a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist and Radiology Manager.  The technologist or manager may provide detailed instructions on new procedures and techniques, and advises on technical problems.   Work is spot checked for diagnostic value and for methods used in conducting the examination.  Textbooks, technical manuals and research/journals on radiology are available for additional guidance.  The incumbent must maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field on radiology recommend new methods, examinations and guidelines for adoption.  Procedures change frequently due to new developments in the field. 

Extent of Supervision

The Radiology Student will be working in the Radiology Department performing radiographic and CT images while another Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist is on campus at all times.

Responsibility for Accuracy

The purpose of the work is to provide imaging studies for diagnosis and treatment to patients.  The effect of the incumbent performance of duties directly relates to the correct or incorrect physician diagnosis and treatment.  Clear and accurate studies are essential to enable the physician to evaluate and treat for patient’s conditions.
