What is a mobile packet core network engineer?

A Mobile Packet Core Network Engineer is a telecommunications professional who designs, implements, maintains, and optimizes the core network systems that handle data traffic in mobile networks. These engineers are responsible for ensuring reliable and efficient data connectivity across 3G, 4G, and 5G networks, including components like the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G Core (5GC). Their work involves configuring network elements, troubleshooting issues, and supporting network upgrades to meet increasing demand for mobile data and new technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile packet core network engineer?

To thrive as a Mobile Packet Core Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of mobile core network architecture, protocols (such as GTP, Diameter, and SCTP), and hands-on experience with packet core elements like EPC, 5GC, and IMS, typically supported by a degree in telecommunications or related fields. Familiarity with network simulation tools, monitoring systems, and relevant certifications (e.g., Cisco, Nokia, or Ericsson certifications) is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, effective troubleshooting, and clear communication skills help you excel in resolving complex network issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring reliable network performance, seamless service delivery, and rapid resolution of critical incidents in mobile communications environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by mobile packet core network engineers in maintaining network performance?

Mobile Packet Core Network Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring high availability and low latency in rapidly evolving mobile networks. They must troubleshoot complex issues caused by increasing data traffic, integration of new technologies like 5G, and interoperability between multi-vendor equipment. Proactive monitoring, regular software updates, and close collaboration with radio and transport network teams are crucial to maintaining optimal performance and minimizing downtime. Staying current with evolving standards and best practices also plays a key role in overcoming these challenges.

This role is critical to ensuring scalability, resiliency, and performance across our core, aggregation, and access networks.

The ideal candidate has deep experience operating within an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or telecommunications environment, with hands-on expertise in Adtran access platforms, Arista routing/switching, and large-scale FTTH deployments.

This is a senior-level technical role requiring both architectural leadership and advanced operational troubleshooting capability.

Key Responsibilities
Core Network Architecture & Engineering

  • Design, implement, and maintain high-availability IP/MPLS core networks.
  • Engineer scalable BGP-based edge and peering infrastructure.
  • Architect resilient L2/L3 topologies for aggregation and backbone layers.
  • Lead IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack strategy and deployment.

FTTH & Access Network Engineering

  • Design and support FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) GPON/XGS-PON environments.
  • Configure and manage Adtran OLTs, aggregation platforms, and access systems.
  • Support subscriber provisioning models and service delivery frameworks.
  • Collaborate with outside plant (OSP) and field engineering teams.

Routing & Switching (Arista Focus)

  • Deploy and support Arista switching and routing platforms in core and aggregation roles.
  • Implement EVPN/VxLAN where applicable.
  • Optimize traffic engineering, QoS, and multicast routing.

ISP Operations & Optimization

  • Support upstream providers, IX peering, and transit relationships.
  • Perform traffic capacity planning and bandwidth forecasting.
  • Lead root cause analysis of network outages and performance incidents.
  • Develop monitoring, alerting, and performance visibility standards.
  • Participate in Tier 3 escalation and on-call rotation.

Automation & Documentation

  • Drive automation initiatives (Python, Ansible, etc.).
  • Maintain accurate network diagrams, IP schema, and routing policies.
  • Develop operational runbooks and engineering standards.

  • Required Qualifications
7-10+ years of experience in a carrier, ISP, or telecommunications environment.
