What is a mobile packet core engineer?

A Mobile Packet Core Engineer is a telecommunications specialist responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the core network infrastructure that handles data traffic in mobile networks. This includes technologies such as EPC (Evolved Packet Core) in 4G LTE and 5G Core, which manage data sessions, mobility, and internet connectivity for mobile users. These engineers ensure efficient routing, quality of service, security, and network scalability. They troubleshoot core network issues, optimize performance, and support the deployment of new services within the mobile packet core domain.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a mobile packet core engineer?

To thrive as a Mobile Packet Core Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications engineering, IP networking, and mobile network architecture, often supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications. Familiarity with core network elements like EPC/5GC, GGSN, SGW, PGW, and tools such as Wireshark, Cisco, and Ericsson or Nokia systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help in diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure robust, scalable, and reliable mobile network services essential for operator and customer satisfaction.

What are common challenges faced by mobile packet core engineers in maintaining network performance?

Mobile Packet Core Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing network congestion, ensuring seamless handovers between different network nodes, and troubleshooting complex issues that can impact data throughput or latency. They must also stay updated with evolving technologies like 5G, which introduces new protocols and architectures. Collaboration with radio access network teams and IT security specialists is often required to optimize performance and maintain a secure, reliable core network.

What is the difference between Mobile Packet Core Engineer vs Mobile Network Engineer?

Job description

Summary:

VIAVI (NASDAQ: VIAV) is a global provider of network test, monitoring and assurance solutions for telecommunications, cloud, enterprises, first responders, military, aerospace, and railway. VIAVI is also a leader in light management technologies for 3D sensing, anti-counterfeiting, consumer electronics, industrial, automotive, government and aerospace applications.
We are the people behind the products that help keep the world connected at home, school, work, at play, and everywhere in between. VIAVI employees are passionate about supporting customer success and we welcome people who bring their best every day to the company - to question, to collaborate and to push for solutions that will delight our customers.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Position Summary

VIAVI Solutions is seeking an accomplished sales executive to lead growth for our NITRO CORE, NITRO RAN, and NITRO AIOps assurance solutions across North America. In this strategic role, you will own the full sales cycle within a portfolio of existing and target accounts, positioning VIAVI software, services, and hardware against our customers' most pressing network challenges. This position reports to the Vice President of Sales, Americas.

As wireline and wireless networks grow more complex, operators depend on real-time visibility into network and service performance to protect the subscriber experience. The VIAVI NITRO portfolio delivers that visibility: NITRO CORE for mobile packet and IMS core assurance, NITRO RAN for radio access network performance, and NITRO AIOps for AI-driven service operations and automation. You will work closely with end customers, development partners, and VIAVI engineering and marketing teams to shape solution strategy, grow market share, and translate complex technology into a clear business case.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute the North America sales strategy for NITRO CORE, NITRO RAN, and NITRO AIOps in support of VIAVI growth objectives.
  • Drive the solution-sales effort in assigned accounts, managing complex, multi-stakeholder sales cycles from qualification through close.
  • Build and maintain executive-level customer relationships and support customers across the full product life cycle.
  • Align VIAVI solutions to customer business metrics and KPIs, scoping projects that combine software, services, and hardware.
  • Conduct competitive analysis through research and dialogue with customers, partners, and VIAVI business-unit experts, and use it to sharpen positioning.
  • Partner with customers, sales, and business development to identify and define solution requirements, and articulate VIAVI key value propositions.
  • Collaborate with VIAVI engineering, support, and services teams to define and deliver new solutions.
  • Manage the interfaces between the client and VIAVI business-unit support teams.
  • Support management in building business plans and new growth initiatives for North America.

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering, technology, business, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years in telecom operations and solutions, ideally in a NOC or SOC environment, with a record of successful solution development and management.
  • Strong technical background in mobile core (packet, IMS) and RAN protocols, and in fiber optics including PON and transport - covering service operations and troubleshooting across both domains.
  • Deep understanding of network operational processes, with the ability to relate solutions to practical use cases.
  • Working knowledge of user-plane DPI analysis and control-plane and user-plane KPIs.
  • Experience with network architectures and probing methods, both physical and virtual.
  • Experience with cloud network infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and the associated security requirements.
  • Strong grasp of cloud computing technologies, including virtual machines, Docker, LXC, and Kubernetes.
  • Proven ability to position complex solutions that solve critical business and technical problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to operate at senior-management and executive level.
  • Established industry network and a clear understanding of the partner and channel ecosystem.
  • Self-starter who can negotiate product requirements between customers and engineering.
  • Experience creating business cases and competitive analyses.
  • Collaborative team player able to drive client and VIAVI stakeholders toward shared goals.
  • Willingness to travel 50-75%.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using or selling mobile or wireline assurance solutions.
