Mobile Packet Core Engineer information

What is a mobile packet core engineer?

A Mobile Packet Core Engineer is a telecommunications specialist responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the core network infrastructure that handles data traffic in mobile networks. This includes technologies such as EPC (Evolved Packet Core) in 4G LTE and 5G Core, which manage data sessions, mobility, and internet connectivity for mobile users. These engineers ensure efficient routing, quality of service, security, and network scalability. They troubleshoot core network issues, optimize performance, and support the deployment of new services within the mobile packet core domain.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a mobile packet core engineer?

To thrive as a Mobile Packet Core Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications engineering, IP networking, and mobile network architecture, often supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications. Familiarity with core network elements like EPC/5GC, GGSN, SGW, PGW, and tools such as Wireshark, Cisco, and Ericsson or Nokia systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help in diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure robust, scalable, and reliable mobile network services essential for operator and customer satisfaction.

What are common challenges faced by mobile packet core engineers in maintaining network performance?

Mobile Packet Core Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing network congestion, ensuring seamless handovers between different network nodes, and troubleshooting complex issues that can impact data throughput or latency. They must also stay updated with evolving technologies like 5G, which introduces new protocols and architectures. Collaboration with radio access network teams and IT security specialists is often required to optimize performance and maintain a secure, reliable core network.

What is the difference between Mobile Packet Core Engineer vs Mobile Network Engineer?

AspectMobile Packet Core EngineerMobile Network Engineer
Primary FocusDesign, deployment, and optimization of packet core networks for mobile dataOverall mobile network infrastructure, including radio, transmission, and core
Required SkillsLTE/5G core architecture, IP networking, signaling protocolsRadio access, network troubleshooting, transmission systems
Work EnvironmentTelecom operators, network vendors, service providersTelecom companies, network service providers, infrastructure firms
CertificationsCisco, Nokia, Ericsson certifications, LTE/5G certificationsNetwork+, CCNA, RF certifications

The Mobile Packet Core Engineer specializes in core network components like LTE and 5G packet cores, focusing on data routing and signaling. In contrast, the Mobile Network Engineer has a broader role, covering the entire mobile network infrastructure. Both roles often work in telecom environments and require networking certifications, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job Description

Grid Networks is looking for an experienced Network and Linux Systems engineer to join a small and friendly group of Infrastructure engineers with varied backgrounds and skillsets. Infrastructure engineers all work on a variety of technologies.

Our team is small, and every engineer contributes across multiple areas, influencing technical direction and participating throughout the full lifecycle of infrastructure projects. We design, build, and implement systems supporting hardware designers, software developers, mobile networks, and the customer-facing systems that bring them together.

This is an excellent opportunity for a self-starting and hands-on engineer who enjoys working with enterprise network infrastructure as well as building and supporting Linux-based systems, virtualization, and automation. If you loathe silos and pigeonholes, as well as enjoy a variety of tasks and technologies to fiddle with, you may be happy here.

This is an on-site position at our office in Reston/Herndon, VA.

What you’ll do:
  • Plan, deploy, and maintain a wide variety of Linux-based services
  • Support and enhance the organization’s network infrastructure
  • Contribute to Linux systems engineering and administration
  • Participate in the full lifecycle of a variety of infrastructure initiatives
  • Work with software developers, hardware and electrical engineers, and mobile networking engineers to develop and provide products and services.
You’ll be a great fit if you meet the following:
  • 3+ years in network engineering, systems, or related infrastructure roles.
  • Experience configuring, maintaining, and supporting Cisco, Juniper, Fortigate, and other enterprise network devices
  • Experience managing Linux servers running Ubuntu, Debian, and RHEL
  • Experience configuring and maintaining common open-source tools and software such as Apache, NGINX, Postgres, MariaDB, IPA/IDM, KeyCloak, IPTables, pfSense, Wireguard, IPSec, and OpenVPN
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complicated technical concepts to people with less or different technical backgrounds
  • Attention to detail in task execution and documentation
  • Comfortable working collaboratively with other teams
  • Able to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50lbs (servers and switches)
It would be even better if you have experience…
  • Experience ordering and managing data circuits from Telcos and ISPs
  • Working with OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and Packet Filter (PF)
  • Configuring and managing Quagga and Free Range Routing (FRR) Experience creating and configuring automation with Ansible, AWX, Git, and Foreman
  • Building and configuring software-defined phone systems such as Asterisk or Freeswitch
  • Building and configuring monitoring systems like Prometheus, Nagios, or Zabbix
  • Building and configuring ELK systems
  • Working directly with VMWare, ProxMox, Docker, Kubernetes and similar systems
  • Familiarity with core mobile networking terms and technologies

We offer a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits package, and opportunities for professional development.
