While a Moba is a specific genre of multiplayer online battle arena games, a Game Developer creates a wide range of video games, including Mobas. Game Developers may work on Moba titles or other genres, making their roles broader in scope.

What is a MOBA?

MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, a popular genre of video games where players compete in teams, usually five versus five, to destroy the opposing team's base. Each player controls a unique character, known as a ‘hero’ or ‘champion,’ with specialized abilities. Games like League of Legends, Dota 2, and Smite are among the most well-known MOBAs. Matches require teamwork, strategy, and quick decision-making, making them both competitive and collaborative. The genre is widely played in both casual and professional esports circles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mobile Application Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Application Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, Kotlin, Swift, or Flutter), a solid understanding of mobile UI/UX principles, and usually a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs) like Android Studio or Xcode, as well as proficiency in using APIs and version control systems like Git, is essential. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and addressing user needs. These competencies ensure the creation of high-quality, user-friendly, and efficient mobile applications that meet both client and market demands.

What are some common challenges faced by MOBA game designers, and how do they address them in a professional studio environment?

MOBA game designers often face challenges such as balancing diverse characters, ensuring fair gameplay, and keeping the game engaging for both new and veteran players. They collaborate closely with data analysts, QA testers, and player community managers to gather feedback and analyze gameplay metrics. Regular playtesting, iterative design adjustments, and prompt patch releases are industry-standard practices to address these challenges, ensuring a competitive and enjoyable experience for the player base.

  • Contribute to long-term strategy for champion production and pipeline scalability
  • Manage complex dependencies across teams-of-teams, including global co-development partners
  • Continuously improve team health by identifying opportunities to define and refine how we work as a team

  • A minimum of 4 years of direct people management experience
  • Experience working with character or asset production pipelines (e.g. champions, skins, or similar content)
  • Familiarity with League of Legends or similar MOBA/live-service games

  • Strong systems thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive alignment across teams
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to deliver AAA gameplay experiences
  • Ability to disambiguate product vision into gameplay requirements and appropriately sized features and functionality
  • Ability to manage change across teams, organizations and cultures

For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes the delight of players. We will be looking at your past studies, experience, and your personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about the experiences of players, this could be the role for you!
