What is the difference between Mmwave Ic Design Engineer vs RFIC Design Engineer?

AspectMmwave Ic Design EngineerRFIC Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF or Microwave specializationBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF or Microwave specialization
Work EnvironmentSemiconductor companies, telecom, aerospaceSemiconductor companies, wireless communication, telecom
Industry UsageDesigning millimeter-wave integrated circuits for 5G, radar, satelliteDesigning radio frequency integrated circuits for wireless devices

Both roles focus on RF and microwave circuit design, often requiring similar educational backgrounds. However, Mmwave Ic Design Engineers specialize in millimeter-wave frequencies used in 5G and radar, while RFIC Design Engineers work across a broader range of RF frequencies for wireless communication. The roles overlap in skills and work environment but differ in specific frequency applications and project focus.

What does a mmWave IC design engineer do?

A mmWave IC Design Engineer specializes in designing integrated circuits (ICs) that operate at millimeter-wave frequencies, typically in the 30-300 GHz range. These professionals are responsible for creating, simulating, and testing high-frequency circuits used in applications like 5G wireless communications, radar systems, and automotive sensors. Their work involves using specialized software tools, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring designs meet performance and reliability standards. They also stay updated with the latest semiconductor technologies to optimize power, size, and cost of the ICs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mmWave IC design engineer?

To thrive as a Mmwave IC Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, microwave/RF circuit theory, and experience with integrated circuit (IC) design, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with design tools such as Cadence, ADS, EM simulators, and familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable successful collaboration and innovation in complex projects. These skills ensure the development of high-performance mmWave circuits critical for advanced communications and sensing applications.

What are some common challenges faced by mmWave IC design engineers when working on high-frequency circuit design?

MmWave IC Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to signal integrity, parasitic effects, and electromagnetic interference due to the extremely high frequencies involved. Achieving precise layout, minimizing losses, and ensuring impedance matching are critical, as even minor design flaws can significantly impact performance. Collaboration with PCB designers, system architects, and test engineers is essential to address these complexities and ensure the successful integration of mmWave components into larger systems.

Job description

Build the silicon brain of the next computing era | VP of Engineering, IC Design | Lead chip teams at Ixana

About Ixana Ixana is a Purdue University spinoff developing brain-inspired wearable computing. We've developed Wi-R, a patented wireless communication technology that uses 100x less energy than Bluetooth or Wiโ€‘Fiโ€”streaming highโ€‘speed data through an Eโ€‘field bubble around the body. Our 60โ€‘person team is pioneering the first realโ€‘time bodyโ€‘areaโ€‘network platform for wearables, neural sensors, and more.

The Wiโ€‘R Revolution Wiโ€‘R enables ultraโ€‘lowโ€‘power, highโ€‘bandwidth communication through electric fields instead of radiating RFโ€”making it ideal for bodyโ€‘worn devices. Imagine transferring data through a touch or enabling realโ€‘time sensing without battery drain.

See Wiโ€‘R in action: ixana.ai or watch this demo: Contact Transfer with a Tap

The Role: VP Engineering, IC Design We're looking for a visionary leader to build and scale our silicon design organization. Youโ€™ll drive innovation, set the technical roadmap, and lead the design and delivery of our Wiโ€‘R chips. This role is critical as we expand Wiโ€‘R into commercial wearables, neural interfaces, and highโ€‘impact edge AI devices.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Lead and grow a worldโ€‘class IC design team across analog, mixedโ€‘signal, RF, and digital domains
  • Own the endโ€‘toโ€‘end chip lifecycleโ€”from concept to GDSII to bringโ€‘up and production
  • Set architectural direction and technical standards across IC design projects
  • Work crossโ€‘functionally with hardware, firmware, and product teams to translate chip performance into realโ€‘world applications
  • Guide vendor/EDA tool engagement, IP integration, and tapeout execution
  • Hire, mentor, and retain exceptional engineering talent
  • Represent engineering in executive strategy discussions and technical partnerships

What Weโ€™re Looking For

Required:

  • 10โ€“20 years of experience in analog and mixedโ€‘signal IC design
  • Demonstrated leadership in taking chips from first spec to highโ€‘yield production
  • Deep expertise in design for lowโ€‘power, wireless, or wearable applications
  • Experience leading and scaling highโ€‘performance engineering teams
  • Strategic thinker with a handsโ€‘on approach to solving engineering challenges

Preferred:

  • Tapeout experience in startups or productโ€‘first environments
  • Familiarity with systemโ€‘level design and integration (including firmware/hardware coโ€‘design)
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • A track record of mentorship and team development

Why Ixana?

  • Work on onceโ€‘inโ€‘aโ€‘decade tech: ultraโ€‘efficient, bodyโ€‘centric communication
  • Lead IC engineering at a company where your designs will ship quickly and globally
  • Collaborate with pioneers in wireless, chip, and embedded system design
  • Build a legacy team and define a new category of computing

Location West Lafayette, IN โ€” Onโ€‘site at our core R&D and chip design facility (We offer relocation packages for strong candidates.)
