Department Summary:

The Research Department at the New York Academy of Medicine conducts applied, mixed-methods research and evaluation to improve population health and advance health equity. Our work focuses on generating actionable insights that inform programs, policy, and practice across health and social service systems. In addition to research and evaluation, the Department provides technical assistance to community-based organizations, health systems, and public agencies to strengthen the delivery of health and social services. We support workforce development and capacity-building initiatives, helping practitioners translate evidence into effective, community-responsive approaches. The Department also convenes cross-sector stakeholders to foster collaboration and shared learning across the health and social service landscape.

Across all areas of work, we incorporate approaches from narrative health, recognizing the importance of storytelling, lived experience, and community voice in shaping equitable systems and improving health outcomes.

Position Summary/Overview:

The Research Assistant will provide support for mixed-methods, community-based evaluation and technical assistance projects related to health and healthcare, as well as the social, environmental, and structural determinants of health (e.g., healthy food access, quality housing).

The Research Assistant will support a portfolio of mixed-methods research, evaluation, and technical assistance focused on:

• Community-based and health systems research
• Healthy aging
• Maternal health
• Climate and health

The NYAM team is a highly collaborative group that works together to complete a range of mixed-methods projects. We hope to find someone who is collaborative, dedicated, and can grow in this role.

NYAM is currently operating under a hybrid work model. This role requires regular in-person data collection and meetings so candidates must live in New York City.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Outreach and recruitment. Support recruitment of participants for research projects through community outreach. Manage communication with participants.
• Data collection. Assist in the coordination and implementation of data collection activities such as interviews, focus groups, surveys, and pilot observations. Oversee management of data collection operations. Develop brief participant satisfaction surveys.
• Data analysis. Code qualitative interview and focus group transcripts and create tables to present quantitative data with the support of other staff; assist with synthesis of mixed-methods findings and other related tasks.
• Technical assistance and program support. Provide coordination and administrative support for technical assistance initiatives, including learning collaboratives, coaching calls, and workforce development activities; take detailed notes and help track key themes and action items.
• Webinar and convening coordination. Provide logistical support for webinars, trainings, and stakeholder convenings, including managing registration, scheduling, participant communications, and documenting discussion themes and feedback.
• Project reporting. Collaborate on the preparation of project reports and presentations, including but not limited to conducting literature reviews, creating slides, drafting summaries, and contributing to reports, manuscripts, and other dissemination materials as appropriate.
• Literature review. Conduct literature reviews to support proposal writing, project development and implementation in consultation with supervisors.
• Administrative support. Provide logistical support including but not limited to scheduling, event-planning, preparing research materials, maintaining project documentation, and sending and tracking participant incentives.
• Occasional travel. Occasional travel within New York City and New York State for data collection, site visits, trainings, or convenings
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Highly motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
• Strong interest in public health, program evaluation, social determinants of health, health policy, climate change and health, or other similar topics.
• Ability to interact by phone and email with individuals from diverse populations.
• Ability to conduct in-person and virtual data collection on occasional weekends and evenings, depending on project needs.
• Strong writing skills.
• Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet packages.
• Familiarity with R, Stata, NVivo, Dedoose preferred.
• Knowledge of public health and qualitative and/or quantitative research methods preferred.

Language Skills:

Written and spoken English required. Fluency in Spanish highly desirable.

Education and/or Experience:

Master's degree preferred; bachelor's degree candidates with prior experience in similar organizations will be considered.

Salary & Compensation:

$66,500-$70,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

To Apply:

This position is based in New York City. Staff work in a hybrid environment with some flexibility, pending the needs of the department. The current expectation of this position is a minimum of two days a week on-site, in addition to staff or organizational events. Due to this organizational need, preference will be given to candidates who reside within New York City.

The salary range for this position is $66,500 to $70,000 commensurate with experience.
