What is a missions pastor?

A Missions Pastor is a church leader responsible for overseeing a congregation’s outreach and missionary efforts, both locally and internationally. They help develop strategies to engage the church in missions, coordinate mission trips, support missionaries, and educate the congregation about global and local needs. Missions Pastors often work to build partnerships with organizations and ensure the church’s mission activities align with its vision and values. They may also provide pastoral care to missionaries and their families.

What does a missions pastor do?

As a missions pastor, your job is to oversee the missions ministry of a church and help provide outreach, help, and support during times of crisis. The definition of missions varies by the church, but it generally includes evangelical and charitable activities that may occur locally or abroad. Most missions pastors remain at a single church to organize the efforts of other personnel, including the more well-known missionaries. Many details of this job depend on the church, and few responsibilities are wholly universal, but ministries typically provide services without requiring religious conversion from the beneficiaries. This job title is most often associated with Christian churches, but it may be a job title in other faiths.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a missions pastor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Missions Pastor, you need a strong theological foundation, cross-cultural understanding, and experience in ministry leadership, often supported by a degree in theology or ministry. Familiarity with church management systems, communication platforms, and global mission networks is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to inspire and mobilize volunteers set outstanding Missions Pastors apart. These capabilities are critical for effectively leading mission initiatives, building relationships, and advancing the church's outreach goals.

How does a missions pastor typically collaborate with other church staff and ministry teams?

A Missions Pastor often works closely with senior leadership, outreach teams, and volunteers to align the church's mission efforts with its overall vision. Collaboration may involve coordinating with children's and youth ministries for mission education, partnering with local and global organizations, and facilitating communication between the congregation and missionaries. This role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster teamwork, as the Missions Pastor serves as a bridge between various groups to ensure cohesive and impactful mission initiatives.

Job description

Grace Bible Church in Berne, Indiana, is prayerfully seeking an Associate Pastor of Preaching, Teaching, and Ministry to join a healthy, Bible-centered congregation committed to helping people become authentic followers of Jesus Christ. For more than sixty-five years, Grace Bible has faithfully proclaimed God’s Word while investing in discipleship, meaningful relationships, and ministry both locally and around the world. As the church continues to grow and expand its leadership, this is an exciting opportunity to help further and grow its next season of ministry.

Serving alongside Senior Pastor Jeff Gaskill and the church’s leadership, the Associate Pastor will share in preaching and teaching, pastoral care, leadership development, Community Groups, and with some oversight of the church’s children’s and youth ministries. This role offers the opportunity to help equip believers, develop leaders, and strengthen the church’s culture of biblical discipleship.

Grace Bible Church combines strong biblical conviction with a genuine heart for people. The church is committed to expositional preaching, Christ-centered worship, intentional discipleship, prayer, and missions. Recent initiatives—including the expansion of Tiny Treasures of Grace, growing partnerships with Free and Safe Indonesia, and continued investment in ministry facilities—reflect a congregation committed to faithfully stewarding every opportunity God provides.

Berne offers the warmth of a close-knit, family-oriented community while remaining within easy reach of larger regional cities. It is an excellent place to build lasting relationships, raise a family, and invest in long-term ministry.

The pastor who will thrive at Grace Bible loves God’s Word, shepherds people with humility, values collaborative leadership, and desires to make disciples across generations. If that reflects both your calling and your convictions, we would be honored to begin a conversation with you.
