Miscellaneous Metals Detailer
$25-$30/hour | Frederick, MD

Miscellaneous Metals, Inc. is an award-winning specialty steel fabrication and installation contractor serving commercial construction projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic. We are seeking an experienced Steel Detailer to join our in-house detailing team in Frederick, Maryland. This is a full-time, in-person position.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Strong AutoCAD skills with the ability to prepare accurate shop and fabrication drawings.
  • Experience with 3D modeling for structural steel or miscellaneous metals.
  • Advance Steel experience is preferred; candidates with strong AutoCAD skills and the willingness and ability to learn Advance Steel are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience preparing shop drawings for stairs, handrails, guardrails, ladders, embeds, and other miscellaneous metal components used in commercial construction.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, steel stair, handrail, and connection detailing for fabrication and field installation.
  • The ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings and specifications.
Please Note: This position focuses on commercial miscellaneous metals detailing and fabrication drawings. Experience limited to architectural, residential, furniture, or interior design, or to mechanical drafting alone, will not meet the requirements of this role.
Essential Job Duties
  • Review architectural, structural, and project specifications to determine detailing requirements.
  • Prepare accurate shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and erection plans using AutoCAD and Advance Steel (or learn Advance Steel through on-the-job training).
  • Develop 3D models for miscellaneous metal components and assemblies.
  • Detail steel stairs, handrails, guardrails, ladders, embeds, and their typical fabrication connections.
  • Generate bills of materials to support purchasing, fabrication, and project planning.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project specifications.
  • Coordinate revisions and drawing updates with project managers, fabricators, and field personnel.
  • Assist with material takeoffs, estimating, and identifying potential project constraints.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of experience using AutoCAD to prepare fabrication or shop drawings.
  • Experience reading and interpreting architectural and structural drawings.
  • Experience creating or working with 3D models.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience detailing miscellaneous metals used in commercial construction, including:
    • Steel stairs
    • Handrails
    • Guardrails
    • Ladders
    • Embeds
  • Experience checking fabrication drawings for accuracy and constructability.
  • Experience with fabrication processes and field installation practices.
  • Knowledge of steel connections used in miscellaneous metals.
  • Experience with material takeoffs and construction estimating.
  • Advanced Steel experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Advanced AutoCAD proficiency.
  • Ability to quickly learn new detailing software and workflows.
