THE POSITION

Join the Department of Environmental Protection, Cambria District Mining Office as an Environmental Trainee and start a career that protects Pennsylvania's land and water. This role will give you hands-on experience while learning how mining activities impact the environment. You will work with experienced inspectors who will help guide your development. This position is a great way to build skills that support safe and responsible resource use.



DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports field investigations and inspections that help protect the environment and ensure mining activities follow state laws and regulations. You will participate in a 12-month on-the-job training program. As an Environmental Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Complaint Investigation: Investigate public concerns about blasting, water issues, and environmental impacts at mining sites
  • Site Inspections: Conduct full, partial, and follow-up inspections of coal and non-coal mining operations and related facilities
  • Violation Evaluation: Identify environmental or safety violations using inspection data, lab reports, and field observations
  • Sampling Work: Collect water samples and gather field data for streams, watersheds, and groundwater studies
  • Public Communication: Attend site meetings and provide information to operators, officials, and community members
  • Reporting Duties: Prepare reports, maintain logs, and document findings related to inspections and investigations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Ebensburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907 (before taxes).
