Job description

Detroit, MI

$32.30/hr (Mechanic) | $35.30/hr (Master Mechanic with Certification)

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on, high-skill role maintaining and repairing the heavy mining equipment that keeps salt extraction running safely and on schedule. With 5 openings available, you'll join a team where your mechanical expertise directly impacts production — and where growth and brand recognition back your career long-term. If you thrive in an industrial environment and bring serious heavy equipment experience, this role was built for you.

Your Day-to-Day
  • Diagnose, repair, and rebuild heavy mining equipment including haul trucks, wheel loaders, bulldozers, conveyors, cranes, and personnel transport vehicles
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems to OEM standards
  • Perform preventative maintenance — fluid levels, lube points, and routine inspections
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists, hand tools, and pneumatic tools
  • Perform arc/MIG welding on broken parts and structural members
  • Utilize technical drawings and diagnostic testing equipment to isolate and correct faults
  • Clear fault codes, troubleshoot equipment breakdowns, and execute full repairs
  • Complete accurate shift paperwork and work logs at the end of each shift
  • Train co-workers and new team members
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations
What We're Looking For

Experience & Certifications

  • 5+ years of heavy equipment or industrial shop mechanic experience required
  • Diesel mechanic, heavy mechanic, or CAT certification required
  • CAT certification strongly preferred; line boring experience a plus
  • 1 year of CAT SIS Program experience preferred
  • Hydraulic systems repair experience required
  • Arc/MIG welding experience required (arc welding highly preferred; TIG not applicable)
  • Knowledge of Tier 4 engines and DPF systems
  • Underground welding experience a plus
  • Note: This is not a fleet or light-vehicle role — full repair mechanics only

Technical Knowledge

  • Proficient diagnosing malfunctions across dozers, loaders, excavators, haul trucks, compressors, pumps, and related systems
  • Ability to operate lifting devices and perform component-level repairs including engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer programs

Education & Other

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must be able to read, comprehend, and speak English
  • Able to lift 50+ pounds regularly and work in varying temperatures year-round
  • Must comply with all PPE requirements
  • Background check and drug screening required prior to start (allow up to 2 weeks)
  • No sponsorship available
Shift & Schedule
  • Days: 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM | Overtime available
  • Nights: 8:00 PM – 6:00 AM | Overtime available; self-starters preferred
  • Rotating Saturdays: Alternating weeks (6 days on, 5 days on)
