POSITION SUMMARY: The responsibilities to include surveying and mapping, engagement in capital projects, ground control, ventilation, basic mine construction, and assistance with quality assurance if needed. The responsibilities also include collecting and analyzing geologic data; such as collecting QC samples, geologic modeling, trending and predicting. The position will work closely with the mine supervisor and mine manager in technical support of the operation. The position will also be responsible for ground support monitoring (bore scoping, roof inspection, probe drilling, profiling, etc.) and notifying the mining team of issues or observed trends. The position will support routine QC and geologic data collection and record keeping and work with the quality department to ensure acceptable kiln feed. The position will support the Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager in collecting, analyzing, and preparing data and permitting as well developing safety programs for Lhoist as well as contractors if needed. Fully participate in Crab Orchard's Mine Rescue Team. This position will function as the "step-up" leader when needed to direct the mining employees or contractors as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Collection of quality control samples from the various mining benches for underground mine

  • Review and evaluation of the quality data to verify horizon control and maintain appropriate databases.
  • Analyze and understand quality and thickness trends for impacts to future horizon control
  • Collection of underground face samples and RKI data
  • Work with quality department to ensure acceptable kiln feed through sampling/analysis/troubleshooting
  • Complete, record and maintain schedule of Mine Face Profiling

Work closely with mine manager to assure compliance with quality/horizon control, development of mine plans, and adherence to mine plan. Development and maintenance of short and long term mine plans

  • Coordinate and communicate with corporate geologist and regional mine engineer to assure compliance with long term reserve life and mine plans

Communicate with Mining Team (corporate Geologist and Mine Planner) to ensure that the mine plan is consistent with operating requirements and is in concert with the long term mine plan for the reserve.

  • This includes preparation and participation in the Mine R&R review.
  • Close work with geologist to ensure we have adequate definition of the ore body, and that the mine plan is adapted to the geology.
  • Assure that the mine plan is consistent with the highest standards for health and safety of the mining crews.
  • Assist mine management and operations personnel in adapting the plan to day-to-day activities.

Mine Supply Inventory Support

  • Support procurement process by tracking critical consumable items
  • Procurement of supplies
  • Evaluation and payment of invoices

Actively participate as a member of the Mine Rescue Team at the location. Mine Surveys

  • Survey and track quality control data to define ore zone contact limits in pit to improve ore recovery in all pits.
  • Design, survey and record blast pattern layouts. Keep bench by bench AutoCad records of blast patterns for future reference and adjacent pattern layout.
  • Complete weekly mine surveys or workings and install alignment pins for production crew as needed.
  • Update and distribute mine maps on weekly basis

Planning

  • Complete short-term mining plans to keep operations on budget targets and within the long-term plan.
  • Develop weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual mine and waste storage plans.

Step Up Management

  • Prepare to be the step-up supervisor/manager when needed (back shifts, vacations, etc.) and provide direction to the hourly employees in alignment with the mine manager's directive if needed.

Roof Control

  • Record results of all Bore Scoping and Roof Monitors.
  • Responsible for Bore Scoping.
  • Installing and recording roof monitors.
  • Roof Bolt Torque Testing.
  • Maintenance of Mine Roadway and Escape way Markings.
  • Create, schedule, and conduct monthly Ground Support meetings.

Reporting

  • Record results of all Bore Scoping and Roof Monitors.
  • Maintain records of areas Bore Scoped, Profiled and Roof Monitored.
  • Maintain Mine Production Database records.

Ventilation

  • Perform monthly ventilation survey and report out.
  • Update and distribute ventilation maps as required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

ATTRIBUTES:

  • Experience with or high aptitude for learning CAD based computer software.
  • Familiarity with or high aptitude for learning Total Station survey equipment.
  • Must have a telephone and be receptive to call out.
  • Technical competence in the field is a plus.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid written and oral communications skills, presentation skills and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Physically and emotionally able to work in a mine environment (Above ground and/or Underground)
  • Able to respond to work demands at irregular hours. Must be capable of working any shift, on-call, overtime, or seven days a week, if needed.
  • Must be willing to be hands-on and not afraid to perform other work assigned to help the team be successful.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks/projects and meeting all required deadlines.
  • Strong sense of urgency in meeting customer needs.
  • Must have the ability to work independently to meet all required deadlines.
  • Must have good computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
  • Must be physically capable of accessing all plant locations.
  • Tolerate working outside in severe weather conditions as well as exposure to industrial high temperature, noise and dust.
  • Access all areas within a site which could include heights of 120 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working in both an office environment and in a mining process environment.
  • The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Walking on Uneven Surfaces, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust, Fumes, and Metallic Particles.
  • The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% as needed to other locations.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in geology, mining, or related engineering / technical degree and/or equivalent proven work experience in the field

PREFFERED EDUCATION:

  • BS / MS in Mining Engineering or Geology

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have at least 1-3 years of progressive technical responsibility in underground mining environment. Previous proven Internship experience is highly desired.

PREFFERED EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-5 years of previous underground and/or above ground mining and blasting experience.
