Job description

Supervisor - Mine Development

Location:

Stillwater Mine- Nye, MT

Schedule:

5x4, 4x5 11.5hr Shifts

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

The Supervisor provides frontline leadership for the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of underground mining operations. Reporting to the General Foreman, this position translates the approved weekly plan into resource-ready shift execution, directs and verifies work in the field, holds crews accountable for performance, manages operational variance within delegated authority, and escalates constraints or changes that may affect committed work. The Supervisor coordinates with crews, peers, management, Maintenance, Technical Services, Safety, Training, Human Resources, and other support functions to maintain safe and reliable operations and achieve established safety, productivity, quality, cost, workforce, and reporting expectations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Reinforce critical controls, lifesaving behaviors, procedures, and approved work methods; stop unsafe work, establish controls, document follow-up, and escalate high-consequence deficiencies.
  • Maintain visible field presence; verify workplace examinations, equipment inspections, and work conditions; monitor compliance with established requirements; and document coaching or corrective action as appropriate.
  • Report incidents and near misses immediately; secure the area, notify required responders, preserve known facts and evidence, support investigations, and complete assigned corrective actions.
  • When required, assume Incident Command within the assigned area by initiating emergency response, establishing scene control and accountability, coordinating communications and resources, and escalating in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Confirm employees are trained, qualified, and fit for assigned work; withhold assignments when requirements are not met and coordinate required training with the General Foreman, Safety, and Training.
  • Translate the approved weekly plan into clear shift assignments, hazards, controls, sequence, resource requirements, and expected results; confirm employee understanding before work begins.
  • Provide real-time coaching, recognition, and corrective feedback; document significant discussions and recommend appropriate hiring, development, performance, recognition, or succession actions.
  • Apply attendance, conduct, performance, labor-relations, and Collective Bargaining Agreement requirements consistently, consulting the General Foreman and Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Direct shift execution by comparing actual progress with the plan, inspecting active and completed work, correcting quality or productivity issues, and coordinating timely support.
  • Identify constraints, changed conditions, missed or incomplete work, and cross-functional dependencies; resolve issues within delegated authority or promptly communicate impacts, options, resource needs, and recommended priorities to the appropriate General Foreman.
  • Coordinate work with other Supervisors, Maintenance, Technical Services, and affected functions; verify commitments and take timely action to prevent unresolved dependencies from affecting safe and committed work.
  • Control labor, overtime, equipment, materials, tools, and consumables against the approved plan; explain significant variances and recommend recovery actions.
  • Complete accurate shift handoffs and maintain timely, audit-ready records covering safety, production, quality, workforce, equipment, cost, work orders, environmental requirements, and timekeeping; validate information before submission.
  • Provide timely field feedback on plan assumptions, constraints, labor, equipment, work duration, quality, and resources used to improve future planning and execution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

Required:

  • Knowledge of underground production, development, mine-support methods, equipment, infrastructure, work cycles, hazards, controls, and emergency response.
  • Knowledge of MSHA, environmental, training, incident-reporting, corrective-action, and Collective Bargaining Agreement requirements.
  • Leadership, judgment, planning, and interpersonal ability to set expectations, build accountability, coach employees, manage conflict, coordinate interdependent work, and make or escalate timely decisions.
  • Analytical, numerical, and communication skills to interpret operating data, identify causes of variance, compare planned and actual results, and produce accurate, concise, and traceable records.
  • Current certifications or qualifications required by law or site standards for the assigned work scope, including explosives-related qualifications where applicable, or ability to obtain them within the Company-established timeframe.
  • Digital literacy sufficient to use company-authorized communication, reporting, work-management, scheduling, timekeeping, and mine-operating systems; including Microsoft 365 programs.

Preferred:

  • Experience with underground hard-rock mining, mobile equipment, ground control, ventilation, mine services, work planning, and electronic shift reporting.
  • Frontline leadership experience coordinating crews, daily or weekly mine plans, labor and equipment allocation, changing conditions, and shift results.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and five years of progressively responsible underground production, development, mine-support, or closely related mining experience.

Preferred:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in mining, engineering technology, operations management, occupational safety, or a related field, plus one or more years in a lead, trainer, relief supervisor, or other frontline leadership capacity.
