Job description

The Millwork Shop Manager oversees the daily operations of a millwork production shop, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship, efficient production, and timely delivery of custom woodwork products. This role involves managing a team of skilled craftspeople, coordinating projects, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a strong background in millwork, woodworking, or cabinetry, and a proven ability to manage production processes and personnel effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Production Oversight: Plan, schedule, and supervise millwork production to meet project deadlines and client specifications. Ensure efficient workflow and resource allocation.
  • Team Management: Lead, train, and motivate a team of millworkers, machinists, and support staff. Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Quality Control: Monitor production processes to ensure all products meet quality standards, specifications, and client expectations. Implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Inventory & Materials: Manage inventory of raw materials, tools, and supplies. Coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials while minimizing waste.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee maintenance, repair, and safe operation of shop machinery, including CNC machines, saws, routers, and other woodworking equipment.
  • Project Coordination: Collaborate with project managers, designers, and clients to interpret blueprints, specifications, and shop drawings. Provide technical input to ensure feasibility and accuracy.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce workplace safety protocols, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and other industry standards. Conduct regular safety training and inspections.
  • Budget & Cost Management: Monitor production costs, labor hours, and material usage to stay within budget. Identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
  • Reporting: Maintain accurate records of production schedules, employee performance, and inventory. Provide regular updates to senior management on shop performance and project status.

    Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years in millwork, woodworking, or cabinetry, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in woodworking, manufacturing, or a related field preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of millwork production techniques, materials, and machinery.
    • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
    • Familiarity with CNC programming and CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Microvellum) is a plus.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certifications: OSHA 10/30 certification or equivalent safety training preferred.
